The Palos Hills of Illinois are a small town situated in the northwest corner of the state. The population was 8,872 at the 2010 census and is projected to grow to 10,519 by 2020. The name "Palos Hills" comes from two Indian words, palo (a tree) and hils (hill). A post office called Palos Hills was established in 1871, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1911. The first settler in Palos Hills was John H. Potter, who arrived around 1836. Potter's heirs built a log cabin on their farmstead which still stands today. The early settlers were farmers with some industry involved such as blacksmithing and brewing beer for local consumption. In 1840, Anthony Sayers settled near present-day Palos Hills with his family. After ten years he sold his land to John Hennessey who started several businesses including a tannery and gristmill. It wasn't until 1861 that both Hennessey's tannery and gristmill were destroyed by fire which also damaged many other buildings in the town center. In 1868, Solomon Goldsborough acquired 640 acres of land east of present-day Palos Hills along the Des Plaines River Valley; this area became known as Palmer Park after him. Goldsborough began settling his new land in what is now south central Illinois while continuing to operate his business interests hereabouts including numerous stores, mills and churches until his death in 1913 at age 86%. He left behind a lasting legacy which includes Palmer Park Racetrack - one of only three horse racing tracks remaining open throughout all of Illinois - as well as golf courses located throughout Palmer County adjacent to various shopping malls now home to over 20 million people within a radius covering more than 100 miles!
