The history of coffee in Palos Hills, Illinois goes back to the early 1800s. The first coffee beans were grown on the banks of the Sangamon River in this town. Coffee was originally brewed as a beverage for export and wasn't until 1825 that coffee became legal to sell within Illinois. In 1847, Palos Hills became the first city in Illinois to accept coffee beans as payment for goods and services rendered. Coffee was also imported from Brazil beginning in the mid 1800s. During World War II, many soldiers stationed in Palos Hills brought back a shipment of roasted coffee beans which they shared with local civilians. After the war, coffee continued to be produced and traded here until 1976 when it was replaced by methanol as the primary fuel source for manufacturing operations here. Today, there are numerous cafes and restaurants located throughout town that offer quality espresso drinks and pastries made with whole bean or ground coffees from around the world. The Palmers were among the earliest settlers in what would become Cook County. George Palmer served as Mayor of Chicago from 1897-1900 and again from 1903-1906; he also served as Chairman of the Board of Education from 1895 to 1896. In 1922, Palos Hills incorporated as a village under the terms of an act passed by the state legislature granting village status to towns with 5,000 or more inhabitants within two years after passage. In 1955, following annexation by Berwyn Township, Palos Hills became one of twenty-four municipalities (along with Addison Township and Arlington Heights) consolidation into Berwyn Township pursuant to an act approved by voters November 2nd, 1955; this action increased its population by over 25%. In 1970–1975 several homes were moved out of disrepair due to hazardous materials explosion at Carbondale steel plant which destroyed several structures including one home that stood for eighty years until demolished in 1995; this event helped spur new development around Carbondale Rd
