Palos Hills, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 17,871 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Cook County after Chicago. Palos Hills is located in the northwestern corner of the county and borders Rockford to the north and west, Westchester to the south and east, and Romeoville to the south-southwest. The city's ZIP code is 60534. The first permanent settler in what would become Palos Hills was Jesse James Hogg on April 25, 1827. He founded a log cabin named "Hogtown" on land that now includes much of today's downtown area of Palos Hills. In 1829 he married Susannah Morse, daughter of Drury Morse Sr., who had moved from Middletown Township to start a new family there. Together they established themselves as farmers near what would become their home town square - Little Italy - on what are now Wabash Avenue and Elm Street. They raised six children: Lydia (1830-1901), Jesse (1832-1911), John Fenton (1835-1912), Sarah Jane (1839-1928), William Henry (1841-1900) and Laura Maria (1843-1920). Jesse James Hogg was twice speaker of the Illinois General Assembly; he served from 1850 until his death in 1865 and again from 1870 until his death two years later. He is also best known for his role as leader of Angletsville Branch No. 1(now part of Romeoville) during the American Civil War efforts by many residents including himself to keep Springfield out of Confederate hands when it fell on July 4th 1861 – an event which left much behind for those living within its walls over time – most notably Old World grocery stores still extant today lining Elm Street today! When Lincoln called for volunteers for Abraham Lincoln's Illini Division early September 1861 only a few hundred men were available due to lack thereof due officer vacancies caused by Ulysses S Grant's recent promotion! It was established in 1871 as a small farming community on the Palos Heights plateau near Chicago. The village became an incorporated municipality in 1907 and attained its present size of 2,460 residents in 1990. The village's rich history can be traced back to 1871 when two farmers named Jarvis and Hays organized a settlement on the Palos Heights plateau near Chicago. They named their new community after their families' home town of Paltz, New York. The first store and post office were built in 1872; the first settler to die was John Ahern who died from illness contracted while exploring nearby ranges during his Developer's License application for incorporation. The early days of Palos Hills were difficult; but with hard work and determination, citizens rose to the challenge and quickly achieved success within the limits set for them by those who had preceded them. By 1910, when the population had increased to 2,460 people, Palos Hills had become one of Chicago’s most vibrant rural communities. It wasn't until1920 that Mayor James Molloy ordered all major streets between Madison Street/Lake Shore Drive (then called State Road) northward re-aligned due to new expressways being built then that traffic began moving through town without interruption or slowdown! ThisOrdinance marked a turning point for downtown business growth which has continued uninterrupted ever since - paving way for today’s thriving commercial district including several large box stores along Michigan Avenue as well as many smaller businesses servicing both residential districts within walking distance of each other! Today’s lively commercial district is home to more than 50 restaurants and numerous shops including two large supermarkets – one anchored by Sears & Roebuck headquartered across from Rice University (one of America’s top research universities), while another anchor store anchors what used once been known as “the Little Village” - an area serviced by more than 20 small businesses serving an almost exclusivelyresidential clientele!
