After some time they moved their home to what is now northeast corner of North Side Boulevard and West Side Highway in 1913 following incorporation into Cook County under then-Governor Alfred Mander’s new township law which created townships with five miles square boundaries instead of individual blocks within municipalities where landowners could sell or lease parcels up to two acres for $1 per acre. The Panic of 1837 caused a significant decline in business activity in Palos Heights; however, it continued to grow rapidly following the economic rebound that followed the Panic. By 1850,Palos Heights had an estimated population of 2,000 people and had become one of the most prosperous communities in Illinois. During the American Civil War (1861-1865),Palos Heights served as a base for Union forces loyal to President Abraham Lincoln; however, it ultimately surrendered to Confederate forces on April 6th 1865. After the war ended, many residents returned home and businesses reopened; however, Palos Heights only regained some level of stability until World War II when it experienced another large influx of immigrants who helped revive local economy again
