The Palos Heights Air Force Base was founded in 1941 as the United States Army Air Forces' first air base. It served as an American military installation untilactivated in 1992. The present-day Palos Heights AFB is a joint Federal/State facility, and it hosts the Illinois ANG from 1993 to 2013. The USAF had an active presence at Palos Heights AFB for over sixty years, giving rise to numerous aircraft, personnel, and technology acquisitions. Today, the USAFgtb provides day-to-day operations for more than seventy thousand service members and their families worldwide who conduct missions in support of our nation's foreign policy objectives. At its peak during World War II, theAAF numbered nearly fifty thousand enlisted men and women; today its employees number more than one hundred fifty thousand people across nine states. In 1837, the Palos Heights community was organized as a township in Cook County, Illinois. The town was named for General John P. McClellan, who had fought in the Mexican-American War and then served as United States Secretary of War under President James K. Polk. In 1881, Palos Heights became a city when it was granted city status by the Illinois Legislature. The early settlers of Palos Heights were Germans from Bavaria who came to America in 1818 and began to settle on the west side of Chicago. They built homes around what is now Humboldt Park Cemetery and erected a small wooden church near State Street and Western Avenue in 1830. The first post office at Palos Heights opened in 1840. The present day downtown area of Palos Heights was developed primarily during World War II by military personnel stationed at nearby Camp Fort Snelling Army Base (now Macomb Community College). Many stores, restaurants, and other businesses were located along State Street between Halsted Street and Armour Boulevard while also creating many military housing units that are still extant today such as Regimental Barracks #1 (now part of Fordham University) and Camp Sherman (later Sam Houston High School). During the 1960s through 1970s, much development occurred within east suburban Cook County including South Shore Village, Streamwood Township, Andersonville Township, Lisle Township etc., whichoğuld cause significant impact on PALOS HEIGHTS' demographics; however little attention has been paid to Palos Heights since its incorporation into Cook County over 100 years ago
The Palos Heights, Illinois neighborhood was first developed in the early 1800s. The area around present-day Palos Heights was part of a large Indian reservation that was located near Chicago. The tribe's leaders decided to move their population away from the city and into a more isolated area so they could continue their traditional lifestyle. In 1847, Palos Heights residents donated land to the City of Chicago for an expansion of the city's limits. The new boundaries included what is now Palos Heights as well as all of the current wards of Cook County. In 1857, after years of discussion, Chicago voted to annex what are now parts of Oak Lawn and Hinsdale into the city limits. On October 5, 1893, during Chicago's Columbian Exposition, General John J. Pershing presented his famous "Tribune" speech at Lyceum Theater in which he announced that American troops would be sent to Mexico in order to suppress revolutionary forces there. This event is often cited as having initiated World War I. After World War I ended with America's entry into it, many veterans settled in Palos Heights and other areas within Cook County that were newly annexed into the city Limits (the last annexation being in 1998). Many businesses took advantage of new zoning laws enacted during this time that made it easier for businesses to open up shop in dense neighborhoods like those around Lake Michigan Avenue and State Street. Today, many people who grew up or live near Palos Heights continue to call themselves " locals."
