Ottawa, Illinois is a small town in the Franklin County, Illinois Valley. It was founded in 1836 and named for Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The population of Ottawa was 1,672 at the 2010 census. The community has a history as an agricultural center and is home to both the Ottawa-Gatineau National Mosque and the Ottawa Civic Theatre. Ottawa was first settled by French Canadians who arrived in 1836. The name "Ottawa" comes from the Cree word "haut" meaning high and "pas" meaning path or way. Upon arrival, these settlers built homes near what is now Market Street. They were followed by other groups of francophone immigrants over time and by German Americans in later years. The early settlers were successful farmers with crops that they sold to nearby farmers and traders. In 1840, some of these pioneers met up with another group of Canadian refugees who had fled to America during the American Civil War (1861-1865). These refugees were led by Pierre Dorion (1797-1868) who had left his family behind in Canada for political reasons; he wanted to help free his compatriots from British rule. He organized a group of approximately seventy people including twenty men and thirty women who set out on foot across frozen North America on January 25th, 1847 to join forces with General Winfield Scott's army fighting against Ulysses S Grant's forces on the Battlefield of Gettysburg near Philadelphia PA .
