Ottawa, Illinois is a small town in the northwest corner of Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,818 at the 2010 census. The town is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first coffee shop in Ottawa was founded by Dutch immigrants in 1847 and soon became an important stop on the early Chicago stagecoach route. In 1861, two brothers started a grocery store on Dundas Street east of State Street and they soon became known as "The Founders." They were followed by their sister store in 1867 and then by another grocery store on Winchester Avenue in 1899. The founders' son, Harry Wessels, ran all three stores until his death in 1951. In 1915, Ottawa's first major commercial project began when J M Gault constructed a six-story office building on Logan Boulevard north of Randolph Street. This building remains one of Ottawa's most prominent landmarks to this day and has been used for various purposes such as a library, post office and restaurant. In 1933–1934 Ottawa was host to the World's Fair which brought together over sixty thousand people from around the world at Exhibition Hall on Randolph Street between about 100th and 200th Streets North. It was also during this time thatRCA Radio Ontario set up its broadcasting station (then called WCUA) within sight of Parliament Hill. Today part of Old Government House – now home to the Canadian Museum for Human Rights – can be seen inside the old broadcasting station complex across Sackville Road from Rawlings Place where demonstrations were being held at that time against Nazi Germany’s rise to power throughout Europe after World War I originally cut off communication between Canada and much of continental Europe due to diplomatic sanctions against Germanyimposed by Canada’s neighbour France following its entry into World War 1

The Rideau Canal connects Ottawa with Montreal via Kingston through downtown Ottawa; this route made it possible for goods brought overland from Montreal to be shipped directly across Lake Ontario without having to go through Toronto or New York City
