In 1950 there were 5,083 people living in Ottawa. The population of Ottawa peaked at 10,418 in 1960 and has since decreased by about 100 people each decade. The history of Ottawa began with a group of hunters who came to the area around present-day Ottawa in 1810 from what is now Wisconsin. They named their new settlement after the Frenchtown on the Ohio River where they had been hunting previous year. A post office was established at this location on December 11, 1811 and operated until it was discontinued on January 6, 1870. In 1814 Jeremiah Dixon built a cabin near present day Ottowa Falls which became known as Dixon's Cabin because he occupied it for several years before selling it to John Pigeon in 1830. Pigeon ran a toll road from Chicago through Dixon's Cabin to get goods to his farm near Carbondale (now Edwardsville). This roads are still extant and are called State Route 606 northbound from Carbondale to Dixon’s Cabin Road and southbound from Dixon’s Cabin Road to Davenport Junction;State Route 762 eastbound from Carbondale to Dixon’s Cabin Road;and State Route 822 westbound from Davenport Junction to Dixon’s Cabin Road which run concurrently with State Routes 606 and 762 throughout most of their length today). Dixon's cabin falls within modern-day Ottowa Township but was not incorporated into that township until 1888 when it amalgamated with other townships within Kane County proper including South Wentworth (later Wheaton) Township (then part of Aurora), North Wentworth (later West Dundee), East Dundee (later Arlington Heights), Streator (now Elmhurst), Little Rock Township (later Park Ridge), Forde Township (now Elgin Park) and parts of Niagara Falls Township including Orangeville Village however all these townships boundaries have changed over time making identification difficult if not impossible without more accurate records dating back much further than 1888! An early settler in Osborne County was Gideon Painter who arrived circa 1800 along side John Stephenson Jr., one of three brothers who founded Stephenson & Company furriers located just east of Vienna on theUI river opposite today's Erie Canal Millenium Bridge site – that company prospered until its bankruptcy during prohibition era! Gideon Painter also took up land southeast of Palmer Lake where he erected an gristmill powered by waterwheels soon followed by another flour mill – both mills remain active as OFA grain elevators still do today! George Washington Carver helped pioneer agriculture hereabouts via his land grant program awarded between1881-1886 while working as an assistant surveyor for Sangamon County assessors under then District Surveyor Amos Kendall! A small community developed around this period centered around Carver's home "Old Carver" located southeast off US Highway 83 just outside present day Arlington Heights - that name survive long past its original pronunciation being earshot only OR 'one way street' or 'east highway.' Otto Bauer bought 150 acres adjacent to what is now Ottowa Falls late 1800′s near current day Ottowa Rd ex N/A so map shows only ever 2 farms actually owned by Otto Bauer!! There may have been others too but those are marked off on map !! Nowadays only fields bordering onOttawa Rds exist !! So either property owner lived there or Otto Bauer did not own any property directly adjacent thereto
