Ottawa, Illinois is a city in the U.S. state of Illinois and the second-most populous city in Chicago. The population was 524,735 as of 2019. It is the seat of Cook County and home to the University of Chicago. The first coffee house in Ottawa was called Dutch Coffee House on Queenston Road, which operated from 1798 to 1800. In 1819, Nicholas Biddle organized a meeting at his store at King Street and Spadina Avenue to discuss marketing coffee for sale by merchants through letter writing campaigns. A group of businessmen met there under the name "The Royal Coffee Company" and formed a company with 500 shares each, which became known as Biddle & Co., Ltd., later renamed Biddle Bros., Ltd., until it merged with Jardine & Macdonald in 1951 to form Jardine Matheson Group Limited (JMG). In 1837, John Thomas erected what would become Ottawa's first log structure for commercial coffee roasting and selling purposes at 404 Dundas Street West. By 1840, Ottawa had five coffeehouses: The Chat Noir (Noir), Dutch Coffee House (Dutch), The Hermitage (Hertogenbosch), Pottawatomie Coffee House (Pottawatomie) and Robert Hennepin's Coffee House (Robert Hennepin). A public referendum held on November 3rd, 1846 authorized construction of the current City Hall on Adelaide Street North – then Ontario Place – after recommendations from Mayor George Brownell who said that site should be reserved for an important public building because it had been vacant for over twenty years due to an insurance company fire hazard near Queen's Park Cemetery. On October 2nd 1861, Queen's Park Cemetery opened when part of new Beechwood Cemetery west of Parliament Buildings completed its expansion project; this area now includes most of downtown Ottawa east of Bank street between Wellington and Bloor Streets including much older buildings such as Canada Place where various stores were built before Confederation including one founded by Sir John Aird who donated land near Parliament Buildings - Royal Canadian Mint Building - now Old National Bank Building -and many more still extant today! Heiner Seibel & Sons was founded in 1862 by Heiner Seibel with three partners: August Forelleisen (1862-1900), Wilhelm Forstmann(1865-1927) und Emil Waldstein(1867-1958).
