Oswego, Illinois is a small town in the Ozarks of central Missouri. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Oswego County. The area that now makes up Oswego was first settled by Europeans in 1774 as part of what is now Center County. The village of Oswego was founded in 1812 and became a town in 1838. It changed its name to Oswego in 1885 after acquiring land from Egypt for that purpose. Oswego has a rich history dating back to early European settlements on the east bank of the Mississippi River. One such settlement was made by French fur traders working for the Indian trader François Pierre Chouteau between 1774 and 1776. Chouteau's post office called "Osmonde" served as an early trading destination on the river for goods brought overland from Illinois and other parts of North America. In 1812, three years after General James Kountz moved his army across the river into Central Missouri, he located a permanent camp near what is now downtown Oswego on land purchased from David Wilmot, who had been forced out of Haiti by Napoleon Bonaparte two years earlier. Kountz named this new location Camp Butler after then-Governor Joseph Butler (1795-1845). After some initial skirmishes with Native American residents living along the banks of the river, Kountz' force arrived within days of their encampment to find only about 60 men under his command including 26 cannons; most all were either killed or captured during what became known as "the Battle of Pope's mill." In reality, it was more like a siege as Butler's forces managed to repelled repeated frontal assaults by well-armed but poorly organized Native Americans before making withdrawal acrossriver on September 8 following which time much smaller contingents under Captain John Silliman joined Kountz' column and continued resistance until October 14 when they finally surrendered without surrendering their firearms or any munitions; thus ending any hopes Northern civilians may have had harboring against Napoleon Bonaparte at this point within range OF Fort Dearborn which lay just downstream on calm waters subject only to occasional bombardment from Spanish warships anchored off Mexican coast (Mexico did not join France until 1830). The area around Camp Butler saw sporadic German Settlement activity throughout most of this period although no actual settlers materialized until later when entrepreneur Augustus Saint Laurent established himself northward near Cairo in 1837 (actually southward due west of where current day Cairo resides) attracted primarily English passengers bound for points east including St Louis who engaged local farmers and fishermen ashore while visiting Cairo en route providing sustenance ashore also engaging local militia drawn mainly from white citizens - good news for Indians living adjacent to plants used for making wine because those operations were intermittent at best owing largely to disease epidemics prevalent at that time among both natives & whites alike especially since French wines were generally considered inferior even though many Germans resided & still reside hereabouts) prior contact with native nations notwithstanding although some Germans did manage intermarry with various Mennonite colonies nearby] building thereafter one major structure: St Laurent House which stands today still standing (& possibly larger than any extant house built hereabouts) testifying how rapidly technological advances advancing west positions communities along riverside during late 19th century far surpassed anything predecessor thereto]... Oswego was a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States, until the early 1920s. At its peak it had a population of about 1,500 people. Oswego is now part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Oswego Township was James Purdy in 1839. The town site was purchased from the Potawatomi Nation on November 20, 1847 by John M. Grimes and others associated with the General Land Office under Ulysses S. Grant's Administration as part of an effort to purchase all of Indian Territory for American settlers. In 1849, $5 per acre was offered for land in Oswego Township and more than 60 families responded; only six families took up the offer and bought land at $10 per acre because they did not feel comfortable living near white men. In 1861, following the American Civil War, most of present-day Oswego Township went into Unionist hands as Transylvania County became parts of Illinois due to efforts by General George McClellan to keep slavery active throughout much of Kansas and Nebraska during that conflict. The Republican Party control of Transylvania County meant that Unionists were able to keep many African Americans from owning property or voting rights which hurt their ability to compete with Republicans when it came time for local elections in 1865-1868. In 1892 there were only 375 residents in Oswego Township; by 1907 there were 2,848 residents living in 527 census tracts (with a total population). This growth was due largely to immigration: over 100 Italians settled here between 1892 and 1906 while German immigrants arrived starting around 1915 (see "Onward Unto Another Era: The Italian Immigration Experience" for more information). These newcomers brought their foodstores and other businesses with them which helped spur economic development across entire township boundaries including those within current-day Skokie Village northeast of downtown Chicago – this area would become known as "New Oswego."
