Oswego is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 3,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first white person to live in Oswego Township was John Nicholson, a settler who arrived in 1824. He named his land "Oswego." Oswego Creek was so named because its main course ran through an orchard on what is now Oswego Road. In 1836, Peter Miller purchased of land from John Nicholson and built a cabin thereon. The community grew rapidly and by 1851 it had over 50 residents. A post office was established at Oswego in 1852, and the name changed to Oswego in 1865 when the railroad arrived. In 1860, General George Armstrong Custer captured Fort Washburn near present-day Aurora on May 9th during the American Civil War while attempting to move westward across North America with his command of the Union Army's Expedition into Mexico City under General Ulysses S Grant; he burned much of Fort Washburn before being forced to retreat back overland to Missouri due to Confederate threats against his life should he continue eastward beyond Mexico City without surrendering all arms and supplies. Aftermath of that battle led many Anglo Americans living along the Great Lakes region – including those living near modern day Aurora – to form what would come to be known as Custer Country due largely to this event and other historical events leading up thereto such as General Ulysses S Grant's march from St Louis across Iowa into Nebraska on April 12th 1861 which opened up Northwestern Kansas for settlement by American settlers looking for new territory after years of British control Lake Michigan surrounded by Native American country required passage through allies if moving westward (see: Battle Of Assiniboine) so fortification along riverbanks became increasingly important as Euroamericans started settling around Lake Michigan especially given increased threat from Indian tribes south of this boundary such as Potawatomi Nation specifically pertaining To Treaty Of Paris which ended The American Revolution
