Artisan Coffee History in Oswego, Illinois began with a small family-owned grocery business in the heart of downtown Oswego. In the early 1920s, Mr. and Mrs. George Young started The Gourmand Coffee Shop on Main Street. The Young’s roasted their own coffee beans andserved their customers directly from their shop. In the late 1920s, Mrs. Youngpassed away and her son, Donny, took over the store. He continued to roast his coffee beansand served them to his customers at home until he sold the business in 1949 to John Bechtel Sr., an Oswego real estate developer who also founded Bechtel Corporation. John Bechtel Jr., who was then CEO of Bechtel Corporation, made changes at The Gourmand CoffeeShop that would later be recognized as legendary within the coffee industry: he replaced all of the original roasters with modern roasters like Peet’s Coffee & Tea Company and Starbucks, which opened its first location in Oswego in 1976. Since 1990, when Donny Bechtel passed away, The Gourmand Coffee Shop has been run by his daughter Chrissy Bechtel as a family-owned business limited by its quality standards only! Oswego is a town in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,531 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Oswego is bordered by Aurora to the north and west, Wheaton to the east, Rockford to the south and southwest, and Lombard to the southeast. The city of Chicago is about 12 miles (19 km) away to the east. The first Europeans to visit Oswego were Jesuit missionaries in 1765-66 who named it San Marcos de los Reyes from Mount St. Michaels in nearby Marquette County because they had been told that Missionaries of Jesus had landed there on May 2 that year. In 1814 when Illinois was acquired by United States as part of Missouri Compromise, Oswego became part of DuPage County; its original courthouse building still stands today on State Street within walking distance of most businesses in town. In 1847 when a new county line was drawn between Cook and Kane Counties following a railroad decision, Oswego lies within Kane County proper but has since voted as an independent village again due largely to its close proximity with Chicago which had become one of America's "big three" cities by this time – larger than any other incorporated municipality in Illinois or even Indiana! By 1870 however DuPage County had annexed most of Kane County including O'Fallon Township (now Elmhurst), making O'Fallon an integral component of Du Page County for over 130 years! There have been various major events throughout these years such as during World War II when huge munitions factories were built right next door adjacent to small town until production moved out after Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor ; or more recently when downtown buildings were destroyed by fire while residents went home for dinner – one such event which remains etched into history as one local landmark has now been restored thanks not only to donations from many people but also state funding ! It wasn't until 1990 though that significant progress was made with plans being put together for what would become known as Park Square Shopping Center – a mixed-use development featuring several high-end stores along with apartments/condos/retail space !! At first, the beans were only used to make Dutch tea, but soon other traders began to purchase these beans too. The first espresso machine was built in 1884 by Luigi Lavazza in Italy. This machine allowed people to roast their own coffee using an oven instead of a furnace. Soon after this machine was constructed, espresso became popular throughout Europe. By 1907, espresso machines had become common in American offices too. By 1912, about 75% of all Italian café owners had espresso machines installed in their establishments-this led to increased sales for Italian coffees worldwide. In 1924–25 Swiss caffeine experts visited Indonesia and found that there was no difference between Indonesian ground coffee and European ground Coffee; thus introducing world-renowned Swiss-made Columbian Coffee Beans (SYNTHETIC COFFEE). Oswego is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. Oswego is located on the border of Cook and DuPage counties. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1853 by John Durnin and his brother-in-law Amos Westphal as part of a larger settlement called Dunkirk Township. The name "Oswogo" means "peaceful place." The first store in Oswego opened in 1854. In 1865, Oswego became a city with a vote by its citizens to make it so. In 1870, George Stephenson built the first track into what is now Oswego from Stickney to Rockford to bring goods and passengers overland to Chicago; this helped give Oswego an early reputation as one of the most important transportation hubs in the Midwest. In 1907, Edward Condon bought 120 acres (48 ha) within present-day Oswego for $10,000 and began developing it into what would become one of the largest citrus groves in Illinois. Citrus production got off to a very strong start here – there were about 25 trees per acre when Condon began farming – but things slowed down after World War I because of competition from other growers south of Interstate 80. However, starting in the late 1960s or early 1970s new growers started coming up through northern Illinois including jobs for many residents who had leftOsweGO during those years due to joblessness or difficult economic times back home
The first European to set foot on the Oswego Peninsula was Giovanni da Verrazzano, a Florentine explorer in 1492. He named it Nuevo Estado de la Illinois after the Duke of Lorraine who had granted him land for his exploration. The area that is now Oswego was part of Indiana until 1778 when the Northwest Territory was created from Canada's Upper Canada and included all of what is now Northwestern Illinois. In 1815, United States President James K. Polk designated the region as the new territory of Kansas and Nebraska because parts of it were lying east of Missouri River.
