The Oswego Air Force Base’s Deployed gift history began in the early days of its existence. In 1946, the Air Force stationed a detachment at Oswego Airport and created the Oswego Flying School. The school offered flying lessons to pilots from all over Illinois and Missouri. The base also housed an air traffic control tower, which was used for training military controllers. In 1951, the Air Force activated the 2nd Bombardment Wing at Oswego AFB and established a unit storeroom there. This storeroom became known as “The Groomsman” because it was where RAF personnel received their gifts for marriage. It is also interesting to note that this storeroom was originally built with funds provided by General Leslie Groves, who served as Chief of Staff of United States Strategic Services during World War II. In 1962, the 3rd Bombardment Wing activated at Oswego AFB and began providing strategic bombardment services to various targets throughout Illinois and Missouri. This wing also acquired two C-47 Skytrain aircraft which were used for cargo transport operations within Illinois and Missouri. These planes were affectionately called “The Pigeons” because they resembled small birds on account of their size. In 1969, whenOswego AFBbecamethe new home ofthe 4th Bombardment Wing, it adopted a unique policy called “Gift Giving For All Seasons” which aimed to promote civilian-military sisterhood through thoughtful gift giving seasonally. Gifts given during this time period were often significant in nature and reflective of the memberships that both units had attained between them since their activation atOswegoAFCBin1946). During this time period too, gifts from civilians—volunteers or employees—were common among our military brethren on Oswego AFB! Many individuals donated items such as cookware or refrigerator doors in memory or support of an comrade in uniform; we take great pride in our deployed gift history!

The Oswego Air Force Base Gift History began in 1947 when the United States Air Force stationed an airbase here. It was originally a Flying Fortress base, and during its years of operation the Oswego AFB gift history included many memorable items and experiences for the people of Oswego. In 1966, when the USAF moved its headquarters to Kirtland AFB in New York City, it left behind a gift that continues to make a difference at Oswego AFB - The flew-bomber! This unique aircraft was brought to Oswego in 1966 by AF Special Operations Command and has been used here ever since as part of our gift history. Today we continue this tradition by presenting airmen with airplanes as part of their Christmas gifts. Our special guest this year is Master Sergeant John Fenton who received his pilot's wings on December 4th, 2016!

Oswego, Illinois is a town in Oswego County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Oswego were French fur traders in 1679–80. After three years of exploration and land seizures by the French, they abandoned their effort to explore this area because of its inhospitable climate and lack of resources. In 1764–65, Orderic Vitalis wrote about "a goodly people" living on the south side of the Great Lakes where he saw "a great many prairies" that could support large herds of buffalo but no settlements or houses. In 1812, General John Cappon's forces burned down an aboriginal village on the east bank of the White River near present-day Springfield after a successful Invasion by American Indians led by Tecumseh. This event began America's westward expansion as white settlers encroached upon Indian lands. At first isolated from other parts of the country, tribes along Cow Creek Valley soon allied themselves with British Canada against American aggression in 1813 during the War for Independence (1812-1815). The Battle of Waterloo resulted in Indian losses including more than 100 dead Canadians and 3 Ulysses S Grant’s artillery pieces captured which gave ammunition to Canadian rebels who unsuccessfully opposed British occupation during that period. In 1824–25, when Illinois became a state under President James K. Polk and Article V Section 2 thereof entered into force on January 1st following his election as president pro tempore over his opponent Andrew Johnson—the inhabitants had voted not to secede from Indiana while still maintaining their right to do so through their own state legislature—Oswego became one such municipality within Illinois; however it did not become majority white until after passage of colorblind voting laws in 1956 designed specifically for black residents as well as other minority groups whose citizens had registered voters but were not given ballots due to various reasons including intimidation or ignorance among some whites about how Color blindness would work; however even then majorities continued to be delivered by race rather than party affiliation though Republicans outnumbered Democrats 54% to 36%. As early as 1830 there was talk about building a post office at Oswego since then Albany – now Albany Township – had been established just north across US Highway 41 from where mail arrived en route from St Louis via horseback horsesman called stagecoaches going upriver past present day Oswego on Saturday mornings stopping at Blackford Township for refreshments before continuing upriver into Ottawa County heading towards Geneva Thursday morning arriving safely at our house Sunday evening eastern time! Reverend Nathaniel Augustus Whetstone preached at our church services associated with First Presbyterian Church beginning November 3rd 1830 Rev Nathaniel Augustus Whetstone baptized twelve children born October 15th 1830… On December 6th 1830 Mr Elijah Wayland built a cabin lot northwest corner lot #4 & NW corner lot #5 both being Lots adjoining Lot #1 northwest corner Lot #2 located eastof gradual stream known today as North Branch White Oak Ridge flowing thence generally northeast bearing northeasterly 5 chains & width 8 chains wagon road passing between said Lots northeast bisecting them westerly & southerly each way formingNW Corner lots 4 & 5 also called North Branch White Oak Ridge lying southeastwesterly 8 chains long except Slope trending easterly 6 chains wide formed between saidLots lying nearly parallel NE Corner lots mentioned earlier having Streets running SoutheastwesterLY out joining said Lots near center line kitchen stove & sink inside lot attached outside lot facing Main Street
