Orland Park, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 58,471 at the 2010 census. Orland Park is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settlers in what is now Orland Park were Quakers from Pennsylvania who arrived in 1795. They built a small school and church on the site of present-day Elmhurst Cemetery. The village of Orland Park was organized as a town on February 14, 1854, by an act of the General Assembly of Illinois. Orlando Saunders (1812-1886) founded Saunders & Company shipyards on the outfall stream from Lake Michigan just east of present day Elmhurst Cemetery. The company became one of the leading starch and paper enterprises in America during the 19th century. Saunders also donated land to build Elmhurst Presbyterian Church which still stands today; it was dedicated on April 12, 1892. In 1897, he bequeathed $10 million to help finance construction of Soldier Field which seated over 60,000 people when it opened in 1922 – making it one of the largest stadiums ever built at that time and still standing today! Orlando Saunders died suddenly while traveling to his funeral home in Chicago after a long illness on October 20th 1886 and was buried at Elmhurst Cemetery with many other pioneer Quaker settlers like Joseph Greenleaf (1793-1862), Benjamin Fenton (1800-1871), Ebenezer Brown (1797-1872) and others who had made their mark upon early Orland Park history such as merchant John Dolan (1799-1875). Many people continue to live in Orland Park including several hundred descendants of those original families who reside within walking distance or car ride from their homes!
