On December 10, 1941, the national guard was mobilized and active in support of the United States during World War II. The unit served throughout the war and repatriated to Illinois after hostilities ended. The army disbanded the national guard on September 15, 1946.
Orland Park, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 66,711 at the 2010 census. It is the 9th most populous city in Chicago and the most populous municipality in Cook County. Orland Park is located on the northern edge of Chicago. The first settlements in what became Orland Park date back to 1812 when a group of men from New York City founded a town called "Schaeferstown." They named their new community after Prince Frederick Augustus of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (or simply "Orlando") because they thought he would make an excellent leader for the new community. In 1819, two more groups of immigrants arrived in Orland Park - these were German Lutherans led by Johannes Gutenberg and Nicholas-Jacques Conte. The townspeople soon welcomed them with open arms and gave them allocating land to build homes on. By 1830, Orland Park had a population of about 400 people. In 1836, John Denton purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) east of present day Orland Park from John Kruse for $10 peracre ($240/km²). He donated this land to the village of Aurora as part of his donation to Aurora Falls Township which included much of Douglas Heights today. Denton also built an experimental farm on this property that became known as "Denton's Grove". Denton's Grove housed about 25 slaves who worked on his farm until 1865 when he sold them all to abolitionist Abraham Lincoln for $1 each. In addition to owning slaves himself, Denton was one of the largest landowners slaveholders in Illinois during this time period according to historian Stanley Payne's book "African Americans in Northern Illinois: A History from Slavery through Freedom" (2004). After purchasing Denton's Grove from him, pioneer rancher Amos Kendall began developing it into what is now known as Kendall Prairie where he built dams and created ponds for irrigation purposes. After moving his ranching operations westward into what is now Peoria Township near River Bluff in 1849, Kendall began working with then-Governor Rufus King on developing plans for what would become Chicago – including ORLAND PARK lands that would be used as part of those plans . The National Guard has been a source of national holiday cheer for many years. The Guard originally began as a militia, composed of patriotic citizens who volunteered to fight in the Civil War. After the war, the National Guard was re-established as an all-volunteer force under the leadership of President Woodrow Wilson. From then until World War II, the Guard served primarily in military drills and parades. During World War II, however, the Guards were called into action on several occasions and played an important role in helping to win the war. In 1946, Congress passed a law making it a permanent part of America’s armed forces and giving Guardsmen greater rights and privileges. The following year, President Truman created a National Defense Service Corps (NDSC) to provide civilian support to members of the Guardsmen. Since its inception, the National Guard has been involved in various community outreach projects. Some examples include providing relief during natural disasters such as hurricanes or earthquakes; participating in anti-drug campaigns; sponsoring music festivals; and providing security at sporting events or other large gatherings. Orland Park, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 153,827 as of the 2010 census. Orland Park is a suburb of Chicago. The area that now makes up Orland Park was originally part of the town of Newton. On November 3, 1847, the boundaries of Newton were changed to those of Orland Park by an act of the General Assembly; this was in response to a petition from John Fenton and others in Newton who felt they had been wronged by their new neighbor on the west side of Lake Michigan. Orlando Emerson first settled in what is now Orland Park in 1854 and opened a store there. He and his wife sold land near present-day State Street and Western Avenue for $10 per acre (equivalent to $ ). In 1855, Alonzo Morse bought some land east of Orlando Emerson's for $15 per acre (equivalent to $ ). Morse built two homes - one at 309 Wabash Avenue and one at 317 Wabash Avenue - and put them into operation as the first businesses in what is now Orland Park. In 1860, Nathan Hale founded Niles' Drugstore on North Main Street between Western Avenue and State Street - Niles had earlier opened a grocery store on South Main Street opposite Union Station. This Store became famous for its variety selection (including items not typically found elsewhere) because it traded with stores all over Indiana and Canada before opening shop permanently at 304 Wabash Ave., also known as "The House Of Hale." In 1871 Jno.[?] Pohlen purchased 400 acres (16 km2) east–southwest of where Niles' Drugstore stood from Nathaniel Dolan for $5 peracre (equivalent to $ ). Dolan had come from Bohemia,, Czechoslovakia where he ran an orchard which yielded fruit that he sells fresh throughout Illinois . He hired local men – George Kappler among them – to help him build fences around his property which included trenches 6 feet deep (1 m). When word got out about this unusual activity, other farmers began buying shares in Dolan's enterprise; within a few years Pohlen had developed what became known as "The Village". Pohl[?]en resided here until his death at 83 years old on July 15, 1958 (). In 1902 Julius Rosenwald donated 1 million acres (40 km2) northeastward along I-80 fromWI–IL (the so-called "Rosenwald Prairie") through Winnebago County () to be used primarily for agriculture; including 2 million acres () still under cultivation today ().
