Orland Park was a small village located in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. It was established in 1853 and became a city in 1907. Orland Park is the seat of Cook County government. The population was 116,851 at the 2010 census. The Village of Orland Park was organized on April 15, 1853, by citizens of the Town of Glendale and portions of the Township of Arlington. The first meeting occurred at the home of Judge John Haggerty. A charter for the Village was issued on July 8, 1854; it provided for a town meeting to be held every four weeks to choose a clerk and other officers. On November 3, 1854, voters approved a proposition to create an office for Collector of Taxes – this was later changed to Mayor – with J.H. Weingarten as its first occupant. On January 5, 1860 (the day after Abraham Lincoln won his election as President), residents voted 1-2-1 against annexing (adding) Arlington township to Orland Park due to concerns about possible flooding that might result from such an addition; however annexation did occur two years later on February 10th under similar circumstances without any significant flooding problems ensuing. In 1865 or66 residents successfully petitioned for incorporation into Chicago as part of what came to be known as "The Great Migration". In 1907 Orland Park became a city when it joined Cook County following passage by then-Governor George Ryan through the General Assembly's Joint Resolution No. 498). At its peak in 1920 there were over 60 businesses operating in Orland Park including eleven banks and one insurance company; all but two had been founded within five years preceding Cityhoodionment date! As part Of racial integration throughout Cook County during those years many white businesses closed while black businesses flourished - witness current nightlife scene which is almost entirely composedof African American owned restaurants/bars!
