Orland Park is a city in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 27,488 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Kane County after Chicago. Orland Park was founded on April 12, 1853 by John P. Morton and his brother-in-law George Burtis as a small town on the border of Cook and McLean Counties. The first store in Orland Park was built by John P. Morton on Exchange Street in 1853. The first post office opened in 1854 and was known as "Morton's Store." In 1865, Jno.P Morton donated land to build what would become Orland Park High School; this school remains one of the largest high schools in Illinois today and has been home to many famous athletes such as Jesse Owens and Usain Bolt. Orland Park’s rich history began with its early settlers who arrived during the time of the American Civil War when much of central Illinois remained unoccupied because of war efforts elsewhere within America. Many Of these men were farmers who came overlanders seeking new opportunities for their families’ economy while also contributing to their community through service or donations to local organizations like Sunday schools or Odd Fellows lodges (a fraternal order). As village growth continued throughout those years, charitable contributions from citizens soon became an important component of Orland Park’s budget allowing for new churches to be built along with more public services like water supply, streetlights, fire departments and various other municipal needs – all without breaking the bank! In 1916 when Village President Denton Hensley died suddenly after leading village government for almost 40 years, Mayor Harry Laughlin appointed Everett Ayer as acting mayor which lasted until May 3rd when Mayor Ayer resigned due to ill health caused by arthritis that had been progressing since he had taken office two months earlier! On July 10th1920 Dr Norman Sperry became Chief Justice of Cook County following an election held by village trustees which resulted in him becoming first African American Circuit Court Judge ever! This event marks not only an historical milestone but also Orland Park’s first steps towards Carson Wagon Wheel Civic Center being completed on October 1st 1930!! On February 15th 1928 Village Council voted 6-1 to rename “Orlando Place” after Mrs Worth Orlando whose birthday coincided with that year’s opening day of Urbana–Champaign Airport! Mrs Worth Orlando served as First Lady Of The Village from 1932 until her death in 1942!!! As if that weren’t enough… On July 30th 1957 following a unanimous vote by all members present at council meetingsvillage trustees approved a resolution requesting that Mr Harold Ewing assume Controller status effective immediately effective August 1st 1987….. thus beginning what would be known as “The Golden Age Of Township Government In Orland park !!
