The Coast Guard has been a part of Orland Park, Illinois since 1912. Originally known as the Harbor Patrol, the Coast Guard changed its name to the Coast Guard in 1916. The unit was first established in Orland Park with six men and grew to over 100 by 1920. In 1956, the Coast Guard moved from its original home on Grand Island into a new barracks facility at 6th and State Streets inOrland Park. In 1984, the Coast Guardsmen who worked at 6th and State Streets were transferred to Fort Washington Naval Station when that location was closed down for military use. The building served as the Headquarters for both the Coast Guardsmen stationed atFort Washington Naval Station and also for Units of other services which used it as their quarters during their tours of duty at Fort Washington Naval Station. In 1995, fortWashingtonNavalStation was decommissioned and all coast guardsman who hadTask Forces Commander status or higher were reassigned to shore leave assignments beginning on November 1st until they returned to duty on October 31st respectively. On December 3rd,1995,the town of Orland Park dedicated an exposition called "Coast Guard Heritage" showcasing items related to the history of the coasteguard unit in Orland Park - from old photos to model vessels- along with displays about local waterways and landmarks associated with them. Orland Park is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 74,746 at the 2010 census. Orland Park is the second most populous city in Cook County and the fifth most populous city in Illinois. It surrounds the Chicago metropolitan area and is part of the Chicago–Naperville–Kendallville Combined Statistical Area. The Village of Orland Park was organized on November 1, 1871 from a portion of Maywood Township east of State Road 29. On October 15, 1907, it became a town with a population of 7,623 residents when parts of Cicero Township south of I-90 were annexed to it as well. The village had been under review by the state government for annexation since January 1906 because its land was needed to serve as an urban center for Chicago's EXPANSION AREA industrial zone which extended into much of Cook County north and west of Lake Michigan. In 1912, voters passed an ordinance giving them authority to annex any part or all of Cicero Township that they desired without prior approval from the state government. This led to the incorporation (and later reincorporation) of other towns within Cook County that same year including Aurora Heights (chartered on December 11, 1914), Arlington Heights (chartered on January 3, 1916), Ravenswood (chartered on March 17, 1917), Northbrook (chartered on April 24, 1918), Glendale Heights ( chartered on June 2nd 1920) and Oak Lawn ( chartered on February 20th 1922). In 1956 Orland Park annexed Glenview which at that time had a population over 20k according to their estimate sheet but only 5k residents when annexation took place so Glenview would have overlapped Orland Park's borders if it had not been for this waiver from township officials
