Oak Park, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 113,824 at the 2010 census. It is the fourth most populous city in Chicago and the second most populous city in the state of Illinois. The first people to live here were the Potawatomi Indians who occupied what is now downtown Oak Park from about 1800 to 1833. In 1836, General Anthony Wayne's army moved through this area and destroyed all of the village's crops so that it could not support its own defenders. This event helped spur development around this area and eventually led to Oak Park becoming one of Chicago's most affluent neighborhoods. The first post office in Oak Park was established on July 1, 1837, by John Fenton and James Wardship. By 1840, there were over 20 businesses operating in downtown Oak Park- more than any other incorporated community in Cook County. A sawmill operated by Josiah Quincy was built just east of State Street on a bluff overlooking Lake Michigan near where present-day Douglas Road crosses it today. The mill served as an important link between Chicago and Indiana until it closed down in 1865 due to competition from larger mills elsewhere in the country. In 1870–71 when Northwestern University opened up across town on State Street (now Roosevelt Road), many students living near campus enlisted their landlords to build them houses on their properties for rent; these students became known as Northwestern "graduates." After two years of construction work (the buildings had been designed by architect Nathan Hockney), Northwestern's first building opened up on May 15th, 1872 undercutting all other competitors with its high-quality architecture and grandeur. During World War I efforts were made to establish military posts around Chicago but no such posts materialized; however WWI did cause some Aluminum production starting within Oak Park which began shortly after America entered into war In 1920–21 plans were made for a new Civic Center south of Navy Pier which would have included housing for workers as well as offices for various civic organizations including both local school boards (which would later become charter schools) However due to funding shortages during those years developers instead opted for a smaller project called Regency Village which would have only been used as an office park . Despite this setbackRegency Village never came to be In 1925 Mayor George Reilly convened a citizens' committee formed specifically to study ways best improve traffic flow through central City streets On January 26th 1926 Mayor Reilly proposed creating four lanes each way along Clarkston Boulevard between North Avenue/University Place/Lake Shore Drive with one lane going straight out into Lake Michigan while another went back onto University Place/North Avenue; partway down Clarkston Boulevard these two lanes would merge forming one large toll road running north-south

Oak Park originally consisted of just a few acres of land and was only established as a town in 1854.
