Oak Park covers an area of 111 square miles (269 km2). The name "Oak Park" comes from two different places: one meaning "oak tree" and one meaning "a clearing or open space". The first reference to Oak Park may be dating back to 1836 when John Quincy Adams visited the village and noted that it had been named for an oak tree on a hill near the river. In 1881, Isaac Newton Phelps donated land east of downtown for a park that would include a playground, baseball diamond, gymnasium and other public facilities. The park became known as Oak Park-Humboldt Grove. In 1907 John Davenport gave 60 acres (25 hectares) of land west of town to build what would become Humboldt Grove National Wildlife Refuge. Humboldt Grove was home to more than 100 species of birds and plants including many rare trees and plants. It served as breeding ground for many migratory birds including bald eagles, blue jays, blackbirds, crows, doves and thousands of other bird species during their logging season in the early 1900s. Oak Park, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 37,451 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Oak Park is known for its large number of oak trees and its rich history dating back to 1834 when it was part of the Town ofInterface. The first European settlers in what is now Oak Park were French Canadians who erected a fur trading post on the north side of the current town in 1834. In 1836, an American settler named David Dixon purchased land east of present-day Elmhurst Avenue from the Canadian government for $1 million dollars. Dixon founded what would become one of America's largest cotton plantations, called Dixon Place after him. For many years, Oak Park was one of Chicago's most important bedroom communities because it offered easy access to jobs in nearby downtown Chicago. In 1898, following annexation by Chicago, Oak Park became a city under Mayor John Hynes with full municipal powers through ordinance No. 575 (1898). The mayor had been granted this power by City Council Act No. 8 (1897). On June 9th 1898, mayor Hynes announced that Oakland park would be dedicated as "the public playground and place where children can play together without fear or danger" and added that $3 million should be raised to improve park amenities including an amusement park and Playland for all ages which would include a Ferris wheel and waterpark as well as new ball fields and tennis courts - these improvements were funded partly with money from property owner Arthur Seward who donated $2 million dollars to build both attractions adjacent to his mansion on State Street which still houses Sears Tower today
