The Army has been in Oak Park since the early 1800s. The first soldiers to come to town were on a military expedition led by General George Washington in 1795. The town was named for Dr. Samuel J. Wells, who donated land for the Illinois Infantry Regiment and also served as its Colonel from 1812-1815. The first post office was established in 1827, and it is still in operation today. In 1846, the Illinois Volunteer Militia was organized into an infantry regiment and Fort Dearborn was built to house it. It served until 1861 when it moved to Camp Chase on the north side of Chicago River. In 1865, the regiment was disbanded and its members were mustered out at Camp Douglas near Peoria. The first Springfield Armory was built in Oak Park in 1903 by John Schieffer and his son-in-law, Julius Weiszmann. It became one of the largest arms factories in the world and continued producing firearms until 1958 when it closed down due to economic problems. However, parts of it are still standing today and are used as a museum by Browning Arms & Ammunition company

Oak Park is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 54,521 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in Chicago after Chicago and Decatur. The first Europeans to visit Oak Park were French traders who landed on the current site of Oak Park in 1671. French explorer Pierre Le Moyne founded the village of Pointe d'Iberville on what is now Northwest Side in 1763 while exploring what is now Illinois. In 1802, Ulysses S. Grant moved from Kentucky to become President of Illinois; he and his wife, Lucy Stone (1803–1885), bought a house near present day Wacker Drive and built their home there known as Grant House. The Grants became involved with politics and public service within the new state government, making them one of the most influential people in early Illinois history. By 1800 they had also acquired land east of present day Wacker Drive including what is now Elmhurst Avenue and parts of today's Midway Center district which they named OAK PARK. They donated this land to the City of Chicago as part of a library/park deal that included land offered by John Quincy Adams for his White House – later renamed Washington University – in 1837. Oak Park was organized as a town on November 3, 1847 by ordinance passed by the General Assembly under then-Secretary Of State James Kenedy (). The original plat for Oak Park showed three blocks wide streets running north-south between Cicero Street (then Dearborn Street) and Brighton Boulevard (now North Shore Drive). Central Square was located at its center block with two streets dividing it into four quadrants: Broadwalk ran east-west across its middle while Congress Street ran north-south along its eastern border . A community hall was planned but never built; instead local farmers donated property to build an education center called Knox Hall which opened in 1850 housed an agricultural exhibit from Rock Island Agricultural College before becoming Cook County High School until 1955 when it closed due to conversion into apartments building number 1 on West Franklin street next door on Clarkston avenue
Oak Park was once a thriving community with a large population. The area now known as Oak Park was first settled by the Potawatomi Indians in the late 1800s. In 1849, the United States acquired Oregon land from the British and this new land included part of what is now Oak Park. The U.S. government built Fort Dearborn on the site of what is now North Avenue in 1870 to protect American settlers from attack by indigenous people. The city of Chicago was founded in 1873, and then Oak Park became its official town. By 1902, the population of Oak Park had reached 100,000 people and it became one of the largest cities in Illinois. In 1949, Oak Park merged with neighboring Aurora to form a new city called "Aurora".
