The first store was run by Elijah Howe and his son Isaac. In 1829, John Henry Strother opened a store on State Street that became one of the largest firearms dealers in the United States. The business continued to grow until it merged with John Hargrave's Gun Store in 1872. A smallpox epidemic that year killed many of Smith's men and their families, but a group of settlers led by Adam Brickman took shelter under some oak trees and survived until British forces arrived six years later to claim land for Britain at Fort Dearborn. brickman donated land for an actual village called Oak Lawn where he had settled with his family in 1790; brickmen are still buried there today In 1836, Newton Dyer built a sawmill on Racine Avenue just east of present day LaSalle Street; this mill became one of America's leading producers of lumber until it closed in 1912 In 1846, John Kirby bought 750 acres (280 ha) around present day Elmhurst Drive and built a house known as Kirby House; this house remains standing today as part of Elmhurst Park Historic District In 1850s famous architect Daniel Burnham designed three homes within spitting distance each other on State Street – Burnham House (now occupied by Northwestern Illinois University), Kenwood House (now occupied by Weingarten Realty) and Whitehall House (nowoccupied by Loyola UniversityChicago). These houses remain testimony to Burnham’s inventive design capabilities during this period It wasn't until 1861 that Abraham Lincoln delivered his inaugural address from Ford’s Theatre located just west of where current day Harrison Road meets State Streets .
