Oak Lawn is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 21,906 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Oak Lawn was organized as a town on November 3, 1871, from parts of Naperville and Aurora. It became a city on January 1, 1897. On February 14, 1913, Oak Lawn annexed the neighboring villages of north Aurora and south Naperville. The Village had no central heating or cooling facilities until 1951 when it installed three new furnaces providing all necessary heat to maintain life in its citizens and also serve as an example for other cities that were trying to install central heating systems. In 1953-1954 City Council passed an ordinance establishing zoning regulations for commercial development within the limits of the village which would include areas now known as North Side Shopping Center and Downtown Crossing shopping district which are still home to many businesses today including Macy’s department store (now Sears), JCPenney (now Kmart), Ford Motor Company’s Dearborn Plantation dealership (now Davenport) and Gimbels department store (now Marshall Field & Co.). This ordinance has been amended several times with more recent changes located near I-290 and Pulaski Road making this one of the most restrictive zoning ordinances ever passed by Cook County Government.
