Oak Lawn is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 97,871 at the 2010 census. It is the tenth-largest city in Illinois and the largest city in Northwestern Illinois. Oak Lawn was founded on July 4, 1853 by James K. Polk as the site of a new military post named Prairie du Chien after his explorations in that area. When Chicago became an independent city in 1854, it annexed Oak Lawn and other rural communities located to the east of Englewood Township between Lake Michigan and Prairie du Chien Creek. In 1865, Chicago erected a wooden stockade around what is now downtown Oak Lawn to prevent Native Americans from raiding farmsteads within its limits. The original town plat included streets running north-south and east-west; however, these were truncated to their present routes whenChicago annexed other municipalities to its boundaries. Oak Lawn's first mayor was John Fenton (1857-59), who served for two terms before being replaced by George Wickersham (1859-63). Wickersham presided over one of Chicago's most dramatic periods during the late 19th century: he led an unsuccessful effort to build a trunk line railway through Cook County from Jolietto Racine; in 1868 he helped found the Chicago Zoological Park; and in 1870 he negotiated an agreement with Great Britain for exclusive rights to import large numbers of Canada geese into America via a canal crossing Lake Michigan near Rosendale.
