Oak Lawn is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 36,878 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1868 by John and Anna Oakleigh as part of the Village of Elmhurst. The original village name was "Elyria." In 1905, Oak Lawn became an unincorporated community within Cook County and has since been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Oak Lawn is located in the northwestern section of Cook County on the eastern edge of Chicago. It is bordered by Elmhurst to the north and west, Jackson Park to the east, and Palatine to the south. The city limits extend for about . The first people to settle in what is now Oak Lawn were Methodist missionaries who came from Illinois in 1868 with a group of others led by John A. Oakleigh Jr.. They established a small settlement known as Elyria on Isabella Island near Lake Michigan because they felt that this would be an ideal location for mission work because it had good soil, clean water, and plenty of trees. Elyria grew quickly into a small town with over 100 residents before it disbanded in 1872 due to financial problems caused by its high cost of living compared to other nearby villages. In 1905, when Cook County was created through Act No. 897 (1905), parts of Elmhurst parish were transferred to new county boundaries including much of what is now Oak Lawn Heights and Deerfield Manor eastward along Deerfield Road until their reach just beyond Midway Boulevard; these areas then formed part of Glencoe which was annexed into Oak Lawn in 1913-.
