The Coast Guard's first gift was a Boston Tea Party flag from Massachusetts in 1775. Oak Lawn is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 54,821 at the 2010 census. The Oak Lawn campus of Northwestern University is adjacent to the town. Oak Lawn is one of Chicago's most affluent suburbs and has a high percentage of its citizens who are white Anglo-Saxon Protestants. The first people to settle in what is now Oak Lawn were farmers and their families from Michigan. A post office called "Oak Lawn" was established in 1853, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1860, John Quincy Adams moved his family from Quincy, Massachusetts to this area and began farming there. In 1871, he married Sarah Snively (1823-1892). They raised six children: John Quincy Adams II (1872-1947), Alice Fenton Adams (born 1875), Franklin D'Ayer (1877-1948), Woodrow Wilson Snively Jr. (1901-1980), Eleanor Roosevelt Snively (1902-) and James Buchanan Snivelman (born 1908). In 1902, Abraham Lincoln announced that he would run for President on the ticket of Progressive Party candidate Theodore Roosevelt; his wife, Mary Todd Lincoln also ran as a Progressive candidate against incumbent Ulysses S. Grant on the ticket of the Republican Party. Abraham Lincoln won the election by a wide margin but did not serve out his full term due to assassination attempt two months later by Robert Ethel Mott; he was succeeded by Ulysses S. Grant as President of the United States

Oak Lawn is a city in Cook County, Illinois, on the north side of Chicago. The population was 51,451 at the 2010 census. Oak Lawn is one of Chicagos most affluent suburbs and has been named one of the top ten largest U.S. cities for economic development by Forbes magazine in both 2008 and 2009. The first settlers in what is now Oak Lawn were Dutch farmers who arrived in 1680. They built a gristmill on the site of what is now Elmhurst Road and established a mill town that prospered from trade with neighboring Indiana and other parts of Canada. In 1814, John Dearborn founded Dearborn Heights, which became known as West Side Village after he donated 3 lots to become part of what is today Oak Lawn. In 1827, Abraham Lincoln was born in Springfield Township, Illinois; his father had moved there from Hardin County, Kentucky four years earlier to take up an opportunity to open a new county seat at Springfield (later renamed Chicago). In early life Abraham Lincoln attended public schools in nearby Crystal Lake before enrolling at Harvard College where he became interested in law and eventually rose to become the first Ulysses S. Grant President of the United States (1865-1869). During World War II more than 60% of all production for American munitions came from Oak Lawn; many companies that once operated out-of-town locations such as Ford Motor Company and General Motors are still headquartered here today including McCormick & Co., Belknap Glassworks, Archer Daniels Midland Company, Litton Industries Inc., Sears Holdings Corporation and Sam's Club
Oak Lawn was founded in 1836 by Captain Nicholas J. McCormick and his wife, Sarah. The first home on the site was a log cabin built by Capt. McCormick and his wife. In 1840, the McCormicks donated land to the city for its present location. In 1851, a two-story frame building was erected on the lot that now fronts Dearborn Street. It served as the city's first municipal building and became known as "the Capitol" after it housed both government offices and City Council meetings throughout its history. In 1875, a three-story frame building was erected on Dearborn Street south of State Street serving as the city's second municipal building and becoming known as "the new Capitol". The structure remained in use until 1907 when it burned down during a fire that destroyed most of downtown Chicago. The original Oak Lawn Cemetery opened in memory of Mayor George Biddle in 1865 and quickly became one of Chicago's largest cemeteries with over 10,000 burial plots located there at various times from 1861 to 1927. The cemetery closed in 1967 due to budget cuts but reopened in 2002 following plans for conversion into an open-air parkette adjacent to South Side High School which never came to fruition. In 1886, Cook County was created from part of Cook County lying east of Lake Michigan including what is now Oak Lawn. For many years it lay within Cook County jurisdiction only while negotiations were made for annexation by nearby Marquette Park which would have added over 100 acres (40 hectares) to Oak Lawn making it one of north suburban Chicago's largest areas before its annexation by Chicago in 1898
