The Navy has a long and proud history in Oak Forest. The Sailors of the USS Constitution (1797-1865) were instrumental in the development of our town, as well as helping to create Chicago. In 1898, Commodore John D. Sloat ordered the USS Quincy (CV-3) transferred from Brooklyn to Oak Forrest for use in World War I. The Quincy served as the first American ship to serve in World War I and was a model of efficiency and professionalism. During World War II, the USS Constitution was again used by the Navy in Lake County on occasion. On Jan. 17, 1945, while conducting operations offshore near Racine, Wisconsin Rapids became aware that an animal had been sighted on shore: it appeared to be a bulldog named Samoyed; however when they arrived closer they realized it was only a dog wearing a Naval uniform! On July 5th 1948 at 4 pm local time, Commodore Harry Brougham placed orders with Brown & Root for two new boats: SS United States (GSS-5), also known as "the Lady Luck" because she had been sponsored by Mrs. Anna Mary Sneezy and commissioned into service at Pier 21 with Lt.(jg) Aloysius Jansen as captain on board; later renamed SS America (LST 940). LST 940 would make her maiden voyage from Long Island Sound downstate New York City streetscape past Battery Park before arriving at Pier 21 just steps away from where she would become America's flagship during this period of global expansionism - one year after President Truman had announced his plan to build six large amphibious ships which would dock at Guantanamo Bay Cuba! On Sept 30 1966 while anchored off Key West Florida lifeboat crews saved 191 passengers and crew of Carnival Cruise Lines' Costa Concordia after its capsizing following Hurricane Agnes
