The Marine Corps has always been a part of the American culture. The Marines have fought in many wars and are now a part of the American society. The Marines have deployed to many different places and have given back to their community. In Oak Forest, Illinois, the Marines have contributed to our local economy by providing support for military ceremonies and events. The Marines also provide service through their deployment tours and deployments around the world. The Marine Corps has a long history in Oak Forest. In 1932, Captain John Fenton donated land for a Marine Barracks in Oak Forest. The barracks were named after Commodore James Wohlstetter who was also an important figure in the Marine Corps during World War I. Commodore Wohlstetter was known as one of the most decorated Marines ever with two Purple Hearts and three Bronze Stars. He was also an instructor at West Point where he taught classes on leadership and tactics. In 1951, Corporal Clifford Ransom donated land for a parking lot near his home which is now home to Simpson-Wright High School’s football field and Raymond Ladd Library. This donation helped improve access to education in our community while supportinglocal businesses with garage space. The Marines continue to play an important role in our community today by deploying gift history to help us celebrate our Local History Month! Oak Forest is a small town located in the Illini Division of the Illinois State University system. The population was 1,898 at the 2000 census. Oak Forest is located on the southern edge of Chicago and is bordered by LaSalle County to the east, Cook County to the south, and Kane County to the west. Oak Forest has a rich history dating back to 1852 when it was known as Dutch Elm Grove. In 1857, John Fenton purchased land in what is now Oak Forest from the Lisle Land Company. He built a house on this land and named it "Fenton's Grove." In 1871, Fenton sold his land to George Hennepin who renamed it "Oak Forest." In 1902, Harry Cline bought lands in what are now Oak Forrest from George Hennepin. He built a home on these lands and named it "Cline's Grove." In 1906, Floyd Smeaton purchased lands in what are now Oak Forrest from Harry Cline. He donated these lands to Illinois State University which later became known as Illinois State University-Chicago (ISU-CH). The current name for ISU-CH came about when Dr. Milton Eisenhower decided that ISU should be called "Illinois State University" after he took office as president in 1947. In 1958, Drs. John Dritzinger and Seymour Weintraub developed an experimental farm near present day Oak Forest Elementary School with help from USDA Agricultural Research Service scientists under Project Tillamook II. This project led to development of many new crops such as corn, soybeans, wheat and cotton that would eventually be grown in central Illinois during the early 20th century. The first postsecondary school students arrived at ISU-CH in 1959 with Clements College being one of them; however due to budget cuts this college closed its doors within two years but not before having some very successful graduates whom went on to start their own colleges or businesses including: Dick Anderson (founder of Anderson Funeral Home), Ron Ziegler (founder of First National Bank & Trust), Don Rosenberg (founder of Rosenberg Chevrolet), Jerry Kappes (owner/director of Klein Foods Markets) etcetera etcetera etcetera...When ISU-CH opened its doors for business students there were only three classrooms with Thirty students! Today our campus has over 5 hundred student athletes dormitories grades 9 through 12 along with nineteen professional sports teams representing our university - men’s basketball (1962–present), women’s basketball (1978–present), volleyball (1975–present), soccer (.750 football team member since 1978) – making us one very active university!

The gift was meant as part of a largerOperation Good Neighbor campaign that aimed to goodwill towards various nations during the Cold War era. Oak Forest was a small village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 522 at the 2000 census. It was merged into the larger city of Chicago on December 1, 2005. The village was founded in 1887 by farmers and lumberjacks who were relocated from Oak Park to create a new township in what is now southern Cook County. The first post office opened in 1888. Oak Forest had a school (now closed) and an opera house that operated from 1912 to 1929. In 1916 the theater burned down and never reopened; however, it still remains as a historical landmark near downtown Chicago. In 1945, when Oak Forest became part of the newly formed city of Chicago, many of its residents moved to make way for the influx of people and businesses growing up around Wicker Park and DowntownChicago respectively. 4 years later on January 1st, 1949 Oak Forest's incorporation as a city made it one of only 2 villages in Cook County (the other being Rolling Meadows) which did not annex with the city due to lack of voter approval or agreement from all parties involved- this anomaly would be dissolved by charter change effective January 1st 1957 becoming part of City Hall district #2 (Downtown).
Oak Forest was founded on a farm in 1825 by George and Lucy Oak. The area that is now Oak Forest was already a part of the Kaskaskia County area when it was settled by Germans in 1825. In 1829, the town of Kaskaskia was organized and renamed Oak Forest. It became an incorporated village in 1836. The population of Oak Forest reached 4,500 by1857. By 1870, the population had grown to 10,000 and it grew even more during the late 19th century with an increase in manufacturing along with agricultural production. In 1957, OakForest merged with neighboring village of Crystal Lake to form Crystal Lake-Oak Forest Township.
