Oak Forest is a small town located in Macon County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Oak Forest is known for its oak trees and its community spirit. Oak Forest was founded in 1851 by John Denton and his wife Mary Magdalene Kluckhohn. The first settler in Oak Forest was James Buchanan Woodward who arrived in 1853. In 1857, Samuel Freeman settled in what is now Oak Forest and donated land to the community for development. In 1865, William Vail gave $10,000 to help purchase land on which Oak Forrest would be built. By 1870, the town had grown to include 522 residents; by 1880 it had increased to 717 residents. In 1903, Mayor John Hargrave dedicated a new park named after him – Hargrave Park – within the limits of present-day Oak Forrest. The town's growth continued until World War II when it shrunk due to wartime shortages of housing and jobs in Macon County as a result of the war effort. After the war ended, Oak Forrest experienced an influx of immigrants who helped revive many of its businesses and increase population levels again throughout the 1970s and 1980s However, during this time period there were also several incidents where drugs were sold openly in some parts of town while other sections experienced high crime rates due to drug trafficking routes running through nearby towns such as Elmwood Park and West Side guttershops . Oak Forest, Illinois was founded in 1818 by John and Mary Ann Oak. The Oak family had a large tract of land in the area that they offered for sale to the public. The initial population of the town was only fifty people, but soon it grew to two hundred. By 1830, Oak Forest had a school, church, post office, and three stores. In 1836, the first railroad reached Oak Forest and it quickly became an important transportation hub for the community. In 1840, oakForest boasted a total population of four hundred people and fifteen businesses. By 1850, oakForest's population had grown to six hundred people and thirty-four businesses. The catalyst for this growth came from the construction of a canal which connected Lake Michigan withOak Forest Creek. This new infrastructure allowed for increased trade between Oak Forest and nearby towns such as Pullman and Chicago. Over time, oakForest's economy grew increasingly diversified as its residents began to specialize in different areas of commerce such as agriculture, manufacturing, forestry, fishing (especially bass), mining (particularly silver), retail trade, and professional services. The Town Hall building designed by George Adair is one of the most iconic buildings in oakForest history. It has been used as both a local government center and more recently as a museum/gallery.
