Oak Forest is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 497 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Oak Forest is well known as a center for agricultural production and has been called "the heart of the Midwest." The first Europeans to visit Oak Forest were French explorers Gabriel Le Moyne and Jean Chartier in 1785. They named the small settlement Pointe du Lac after a point on the north shore of Lake Michigan they had seen from their ship, La Salle. The first permanent settler in what would become Oak Forest was George Wigglesworth in 1814. Wigglesworth bought 1,000 acres (400 hectares) of land east of present-day Burlington Avenue from John Stephenson for $100. He built himself a cabin and began to cultivate his land. In 1837, Wigglesworth sold his land to John Prentice for $3 per acre ($27 per hectare). Prentice founded the town of Elmhurst on his new land and named it Oak Forest because he saw chestnuts trees near his home. In 1846, a group of Methodist ministers led by Reverend Cephus Goodrich arrived in Elmhurst with 20 families to start an integrated church there. A second church was built northwest of downtown Elmhurst soon afterward; this building still stands today as One Masonic Temple (now used as office space). The good relations that developed between Goodrich's congregation and local farmers provoked another donation from Goodrich to help finance construction of what is now Northside High School in 1888. By 1860, all but one family living in Elmhurst had moved out when conditions deteriorated due to malaria outbreaks brought about by mosquitoes infesting newly clearedland along the river near where Elmhurst now stands; however, some long-time residents - such as Samuel Hinton - kept their homes into operation until 1975 when they were torn down to make way for new housing developments The city's most famous resident may be Abraham Lincoln who spent two weeks at Elmhurst during February 1861 while more than half a million people across America watched him deliver his Gettysburg Address live on television aboard USS Constitution . Many leading citizens including Congressman Stephen Douglas also visited Oak Forrest during this time including Mayor Edward Whitehill There have been several attempts over time by various groups or individuals either through donations or fundraising efforts to restore/preserve oak forest landmarks such as One Masonic Temple which sit abandoned since 1976 and located on south side suburban street which runs parallel with river
