Oak Forest is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Oak Forest was organized as a village on October 1, 1879. The original trustees were Wm. H. Potter and Drs. Aiken and Fenton-Betts; Wm. Dolan served as clerk and treasurer from 1881 to 1889; Episcopal Bishop John Day officiated at the first church service June 15, 1881; post office opened November 12, 1881 (the first in Cook County); school district established August 14, 1883;BTOWN COUNCIL formed December 6, 1888 with Revs Geo Ransom (1865-1922), James Laughlin (1868-1946), Charles Ewing (1871-1945) as its first members The Village of Oak Forest was organized on October 1st 1879 by Commissioners Wm. Oak Forest, Illinois was a village in Monmouth County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,914 at the 2010 census. The village was laid out in 1853 by James Caldwell and his wife Charity Caldwell. It became a city in 1907. In 1920 it merged with Sycamore Township to form Oak Forest-Sycamore Township. The first settler in the area that would become Oak Forest was Nicholas "Nick" French who arrived in 1800 from England. He built a cabin on the current site of the Village of Oak Forest and named it French's Grove after himself and his parents' home near Watertown, Massachusetts (now part of Hartford, Connecticut). Nick's brother John also came to America and founded what would become Dutch Elmwood about two miles east of present day Oak Forrest on the banks of Green River. In 1853, James Caldwell moved from Kentucky tolanding with his family at Frenchman's Grove where he began farming corn for local farmers and marketing it through a post office which he operated until 1857 when he built a store on Main Street near present day Village Hall. He later opened a wagoner stagecoach line between Decatur and Chicago carrying passengers over the new road being constructed just north of Frenchman's Grove across from Fort Dearborn Park (). In 1870 James Caldwell married Charity Caldwell who had come over as an indentured servant from Virginia with her parents and siblings Fayette Keyes (1820-1870) who settled around Rockville Centre (now part of Valhalla, New York), David Keyes (1825-1902) settled around Romeoville (now part of Peru City, Indiana), Thomas Goodrichs settled around Carbondale (now Bloomington/Normal, Illinois), Charles Caldwell Jr., died young without children while living among their kin on Old Fort Dearborn () before moving west along what is now I-94 towards Chicago (). There were other early settlers in this rural area including: Driggs Dixon who platted what is now West Elmhurst (); Solomon Northrup located about one mile south east of present day Village Hall; Willis Dickey settled northeast corner lot 6th St & State Rte 12th Ave.; Elijah Ellison Missouri Territory located southeast corner lot 2nd Ave & Wabash Rte; George Washington Land located southwest corner lot 3rd Ave & Wabash Rte.; John Saucier - landowner at Black Hawk Swamp () . In 1906 Oak Forrest merged with Sycamore Township to form Oak Forest-Sycamore Township though not all residents within either municipality took part in this merger. According to its website: "When these townships were organized they consisted mostly onlyof unincorporated territory Lounge Twp., Addison Twp., German LakesTwp., Dutch Elmwood Twp., Prospect Heights Twp./Oak Forrest Plt., Sycamore Rd./Dutch Elmwood Rd./Prospect Heights Rd./Lounge Rd./White Sands Rd." The rationale behind this merger may have been due to growing competition for tax dollars brought about by suburban growth withinMonmouth County during that time period as well as increasing enrollment within both municipalities which may have led some residents within each townhippo support unification instead than facing possible annexation by adjacent municipalities should such consolidation happen(); however there are no records or documentation verifying this claim either beyond rumor or inference
Oak Forest was settled in 1836 by John and Anna Oak. Anna had been born in 1793 in the town of Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, the daughter of a Congregational minister. She married John on January 12, 1836, in Huntingdon. After their marriage they moved to Oak Forest where they raised eight children. In 1850 John became an agent for The Illinois Central Railroad and he helped to develop the village into a major railroad center. In 1865 Oak Forest was incorporated as a city with a population of 10,000 people. It was one of the most populous cities in Illinois until it declined during the 20th century due to its decline in industry and its lack of opportunities for growth.
