The first documented mention of coffee in Oak Forest comes from a letter from Colonel John Caulkins to his friend and neighbor Colonel David Dixon in 1792. Dixon mentioned that he had found a small beans crop near his home and asked if anyone wanted to buy them. The first person to purchase coffee beans from Colonel Caulkins was Mr. Brown who lived on Wabash Avenue in present-day Oak Forest. Although there are references to coffee being grown in Oak Forest since before 1814, it wasn’t until 1824 that an actual gristmill was built in town. The mill was operated by Elijah White and his son Amos White until 1830 when they were replaced by the Illinois Machine Works which produced flour, butter, cheese and other food products for local farmers. In 1844, John Hennepin opened the first grocery store in what is now downtown Oak Forrest on Dearborn Street (now Wabash Avenue). At that time, Chicago was just emerging as a major city and grocery stores were an important part of its early development. The store remained open until 1918 when it closed due to Prohibition-related restrictions on alcohol sales in America at that time. This building still stands today as one of DowntownOak Forrest’s most popular attractions with its beautiful architecture and interesting history!

The merger was made possible because both villages were majority Irish Catholic (shared about 60% or more white ancestry) while their respective townships were all Protestant (both had about 10%.). Oak Forrest's rich history can be found through its many civic organizations such as the Knights of Columbus (KOC), which has been active in community affairs since its founding in 1865; United American Legion Post #527; Rotary Club #1472; First Methodist Church;American Legion Hall; St. John’s Episcopal Church; Pioneer Baptist Church; and numerous other clubs/associations that have helped make this small town one of distinction within its boundaries for nearly 150 years!
