The regiment was formed on November 25, 1775 and consisted of three companies: Captain John Cook’s Company (now part of the 111th Infantry Regiment), Lieutenant Colonel George Washington’s Company (now part of the 5th Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division) and Captain James Knowles’ Company (now known as “The Dubliners”). On December 12, 1775, Governor Thomas Jefferson ordered all state militias to be organized into corporate units called battalion companies. Each battalion company consisted of twelve men and each regiment had a colonel commanding it plus two aide-de-camp officers. These companies were garrisoned at various sites around Springfield until they could be moved to their new permanent home at Camp Dickerman on February 3, 1776. When General Francis Marion left Springfield for Brunswick County on February 9, 1776 he ordered his command to deploy toOak Forest. On March 2nd General Marion's brigade under MajorGeneral John Sullivan arrived at Camp Dickerman and encampment followed four days later on March 4th. At this time there were only about eighty militiamen in Oak Forrest and most were serving with Companies A & B from Captain Cook's Regiment who arrived that same day from Yorktown Heights after fighting their way across New York State lines. On March 8th an order was received ordering all militiamen in camp to march out numbered one thousand seven hundred fifty-six strong for duty in Southern Virginia where a revolutionary army now stood ready against British forces arrayed along the Patriot frontier
