When the United States Air Force was founded in 1947, it had a small force of just over 1,000 pilots. The USAF needed to be able to provide air support for military operations in Southeast Asia and Europe, so it began making acquisitions of fighter aircraft. One of these purchases was the Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighter jet. The Lockheed P-38 also became one of the most popular fighters in USAF history. It was easy to fly and its reliable performance made it an ideal aircraft for ground operations. Additionally, its export capabilities made it very well known around the world. Despite its popularity, however, the Lockheed P-38 eventually went out of production. This is likely because it was not able to keep up with new Fighter Aircraft technology introduced during World War II and Korean War era fighter jets like the F-4 Phantom or F-5 Tiger II.

The first time the United States Air Force donated an airframe to a civilian organization was in 1945 when the USAF gave a B-29 bomber, nicknamed “Spirit of St. Louis” to the Chicago-based Aircraft Restoration and Salvage Company. In 1951, the USAF gifted two F-4 Phantom II fighter jets to International Airways Corporation (IAC). The planes were used for training by USAFA pilots and cargo pilots in Britain. IAC also used one of the jets as a base airstrip for its charter flights between London and New York City. In 1971, IAC donated two Boeing 747-400s to NASA. These planes were used by NASA for research and space exploration. In 1984, IAC donated another Boeing 747-400 to NASA again for research and space exploration.

In 1955, the USAFE was divided into two operational commands: Tactical Air Command (TAC) and Strategic Air Command (SAC). From 1958-1969, TAC was headquartered at Rome-Lafayette AFB, New York while SAC was headquartered at Langley AFB, Virginia. In 1969, TAC and SAC were combined into one command under the name of United States Aerospace Forces Europe (USAFE). The USAFE played an important role in the Vietnam War by providing aerial support for ground forces. Additionally, USAFE provides training and Doctrine for both U.S. military members and foreign military members stationed in Europe. Since its establishment, air gift history within the USAF has been diverse and includes items such as aircrafts and missiles donated by various countries including Czechoslovakia, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Norway), Spain (Gift from King Juan Carlos I), Sweden (Gift from Queen Silvia), Turkey (Gift from President Mustafa Kemal Ataturk), Bulgaria (Gift from Princess Elena Pavlova) and Romania (Gift from King Carol II).

Oak Forest is a small town in Illinois, located in the Kane County area. The population was 3,851 at the 2010 census. Oak Forest is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It is home to Northwestern University and DePaul University. The town's name comes from an oak that stood on the banks of the river near where it now stands. The first settler in what is now Oak Forest was Nicholas Schneider, who arrived in 1836. In 1854, John Paulding bought a tract of land here from Nicholas Schneider for $5 per acre (which equals $100 today). Paulding named his new community after his father-in-law, General George Washington Paulding (1798–1865), one of the founders of DePaul University and one of America's most powerful men during its early years. Oak Forest initially consisted only of a few homes and a schoolhouse. However, over time it grew rapidly due to its location near Northwestern University and DePaul University, as well as its rich agricultural history. Today Oak Forrest has a population of over 3,000 people and includes both urban areas such as Downers Grove and Aurora Heights as well as rural sections including South Glenbrook and North Glenbrook. The economy depends heavily on agriculture but also includes services such as health care and schools; many businesses have been built in recent years around Northwestern University's campus which has increased traffic congestion on North Side streets inside the university boundaries!
Oak Forest was founded in 1814 by Capt. James K. Polk, who named it for a grove of oak trees near his home in White County, Kentucky. The first settler in the area was John Denny, who arrived in 1825 and built the first house on the site. In 1830, General Lewis Cass settled at Oak Forest and made a Donation to the Methodist Episcopal Church which is still present at the church today. In 1832, two brothers--Samuel and Solomon Kirkland--founded what is now Maple Leaf Brewery on Deerfield Road. In 1835, Samuel Kirkland married Lydia Weedon and they started to farm around their property. They also raised hogs and chickens on their land until 1840 when they moved to Chicago where he became a merchant with connections to both Illinois politics and business. From there he helped found the city's first bank--the First National Bank of Chicago--and served as its president from 1861-1865 before becoming Mayor of Chicago from 1865-1868). He also founded Illinois State Normal School (now Northwestern University) in 1867 as part of what is now Northwestern University Press . Samuel Kirkland Boulevard runs adjacent to his former farmstead today; it's one of only two streets in Chicago that are named after people (the other being Michigan Avenue).
