For many years, Oak Forest was one of the most important towns in Rockford because it had both manufacturing and service businesses that contributed significantly to its economy. In 2007, Oak Forrest voters passed a $10 million bond referendum to fund various projects such as road repairs, new schools and fire stations across the community including plans for a new library and recreation center which were completed in 2009. The vote also approved an increase in property taxes from 3% to 4%. Additionally, Elmwood Park will be renovated into an open-air mall featuring restaurants, cafes and other retail outlets with plans for it to reopen in 2020 after undergoing extensive renovation costing over $27 million dollars alone!

Oak Forest is a small village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 597 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The village was founded in 1868 by John Fisk and his wife Anna Oak Forest, who had emigrated from Denmark. At first the village consisted of only four homes and two stores. In 1870, the Fisks added a post office and two schools to their holdings. In 1876, Anna Oak Forest gave birth to her only child, John Fisk II, who became an accomplished architect and planner in his own right. When Anna died in 1886, John III took over management of the village. John III would continue to manage Oak Forest until his death in 1948; during his tenure there were several changes made to the core configuration of the community including construction of a new elementary school (1892), a second store (1904), and expansions to both schools (1907-10). The Village also completed its first phase of highway development with the opening of Illinois Route 6 on October 1st 1907 which helped increase economic activity within Oak Forest by providing access to larger markets outside of town. In 1916 Oak Forest opened its annex into nearby Cicero for growth as well as expanding manufacturing capabilities located on land that had been donated by banker James Jankowski; this expansion increased retail sales activity within town while creating additional jobs across several industries including glass blowers and hatters." John III's successor Wm Eustis would continue managing the community during World War II before becoming a police officer for Cook County after the war ended; he served until his death in 1966." After Wm Eustis' death two trustees were elected with responsibility for governing Village affairs: Mr & Mrs Gail Kapp; however due to lack of consensus these trustees were unable to carry out their responsibilities effectively leading ultimately to dissension among residents over matters such as zoning changes or spending priorities." In 1971 Mrs Gail Kapp stepped down from her role effective February 1st following disagreements between herself and other trustees about how best To handle financial concerns brought on by inflationary pricing practices being employed by city officials;" this set off an extended struggle between Mayor Edward Byrne's administration and Mrs Kapp's replacement Toni Preckwinkle over how much control Townspeople should have over Village finances" eventually leading Preckwinkle to relinquish all authority over day-to-day operations within Parkland effective December 31st 1971."
The first people to live in Oak Forest were the Potawatomi. The area was donated by General Nicholas K. Butler in 1836 and is now a part of the city of Chicago. The first settlers arrived in 1837 and named the community after a grove of oak trees on their farmstead. The name “Oak Forest” was given to the community because of its location near an oak tree that stood tall and proud throughout much of Cook County during its early years. In 1851, Oak Forest became one of the original towns in Cook County when it was organized as a result of the Mexican-American War. It remained an active town until it merged with neighboring Chicago in 1949.
