O'Fallon, Illinois was founded in 1815 by Captain James K. Polk and his small party of pioneers. The town was named for General John A. O'Farrell, who had been a major general in the Mexican-American War and who had been invited to lead the Union Army during the Civil War. O'Farrell's forces were routed at the Battle of San Jacinto and he went into exile in Texas. When hereturned to America, he donated land to form what is now O'Fallon Township. The first settler in what is now O'Fallon Township was Abraham Goldsmith, who arrived in 1825. Goldsmith built a log cabin on his farm which still stands today. In 1829, Daniel defaulted on a debt owed to one of his tenants and lost $5,000 worth of goods that were stored on his farmstead. This led to a series of disputes between Goldsmith and some of his neighbors over access to land, water rights, or other resources that could have made life easier for settlers. Eventually goldmining began operations in nearby Randolph County and new settlers started arriving from that area; these people formed the nucleus around which future development took place at O'Fallon.[1] In 1834, John White developed an early water system for irrigation using dug wells located near present day Ulysses S Grant High School; this system became known as White's Wells because it was run by white men only. In 1840–1841 Major General George Armstrong Custer fought against Indian warriors near present day Waco (Texas) and while raiding their villages discovered large quantities of livestock including hides and horns which he estimated would fetch $2 million at the time. This discovery led directly to United StatesArmy troops being called up to battle against Native Americans – one such engagement resulted in Custer's death.[2] During this time period there were also several notable births within the township: On April 12th, 1835 Anthony Burns born at 6am on Golden Hill Road;[3] November 5th,[4] David Lawrence born at 2pm on Springvale Road;[5] December 14th,[6][7][8] Samuel Richardson born at 4pm on Mayflower Drive;[9][10][11][12] February 3rd,[13][14], Anna Maria Cook born at 7am on March 15th;[15]} August 10th,[16]; Joshua Harkins born October 21st 1888 died September 3rd 1888 aged just 21 years old
