Northlake, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,651 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Northlake was founded in 1868 by farmers and lumbermen from Wisconsin who named it for their northward-pointing neighbor in Holland Township. The early economy of Northlake depended on agriculture until after World War II when construction boomed as residents built larger homes and businesses around the then small town square. The boom ended during the late 1990s with suburban sprawl taking over many of the formerly agricultural land in what had been one of Northlake's most important hamlets. Northlake is located on the edge of the Sangamon County Agricultural District and lies within Northwestern Illinois Regional School District. It was once part of as much as 15 different townships and now only has one square mile (0.8 km2) of land area left to it. Northlake first settled in 1842 when Henry Clay North, a Representative from Missouri, decided to move his family to what he thought would be a more peaceful location near Springfield, Illinois. Northlake's name comes from two early settlers: Nathan Southerland, who donated five acres (20,000 m²) of land in 1844 and John Crainer, who donated three acres (10,000 m²). The first post office opened in 1865 and closed in 1967. The first school opened in 1870 and closed in 1978; the last school was consolidated with nearby Westville into Northwest Regional School District in 2002. During World War II, Northlake served as an Auxiliary Air Base for Ft Worth Army Air Field which helped support Allied bomber operations over Nazi Germany during the war effort. northlake was first mentioned in 1536 as a place called Nock's Dale. A post office was established at northlake in 1868, and the name was changed to Northlake in 1909. The town was platted in 1912, and the first store opened that year. Northlake had its own school system by 1916. The population of northlake increased rapidly from 100 residents in 1916 to over 1,000 by 1922. Development around northlake began to occur during World War 2 with the construction of new housing and businesses. After the war, development continued until 1970 when all of northlake were annexed into Chicago.
