However, many of its members continued to serve in local militias until 1866 when all military service for civilians ended in Illinois. That year also saw the first ever parade in Northbrook when Company K marched through town under the command of Colonel John A. Northbrook is a small town in Illinois, United States. The population was 5,333 at the 2010 census. Northbrook is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It is located on the north side of Chicago, about west of the southern edge of Cook County and east of Lake Michigan. Northbrook was founded by German immigrants in 1836 as a small farming village named Hinsdale. By 1860, it had grown to include a school and two churches. In 1871, it became an incorporated town under its own charter and adopted a new name: Northbrook. The original town center was destroyed by fire in 1910 but rebuilding began soon after that event and continued until 1955 when all but one block were destroyed again by fire. The only block remaining today (next to the elementary school) housed the post office from 1915-1920 before becoming home to some businesses such as Sears Roebuck & Co.'s store until it closed in 1978. The community has experienced many changes over its history; some of which are listed below: In 1870-71, Northbrook included three farms called Dunham's Addition well beyond what is now downtown Northbrook; these farms went through various ownership changes over time before being donated to Northwestern University in 1957 as part of their gift to Central Park West residents following World War II bombing raids on Chicago that killed more than 200 people there (northwest suburbanans refer generally to this period also known as "the war years"). These early days were difficult for downtown Northbrook since much development took place outside its boundaries - including large housing developments built near current day Oak Lawn Avenue/northwest Side Highway corridor - making pedestrian or vehicular access difficult if not impossible for most residents living within city limits at that time. In 1955-56, another major fire burned across town from what is now Wacker Drive/southwest Side Highway into what is now Elmhurst Avenue - completely destroying nearly all buildings therein including those on Elmhurst Street itself which still stand today albeit with little or no damage due largely to Being rebuilt immediately afterwards circa 1951-1955 having been spared most destruction caused by earlier fires (though see below for additional timeline events). This catastrophic event effectively ended any hope of further growth or development within Downtown Northbrook though redevelopment has resumed slowly ever since via limited streetcar service running along Northwest Side Highway corridor serving mostly older buildings adjacent thereto while occasional apartment conversions take place nearby currently resulting in some mixed uses being established inside former factory complexes dating back to 1925 located just northeast cornering Wacker Drive/southwest Side Highway opposite Northwestern University campus during prohibition era when alcohol was illegal outdoors even inside towns and villages across America making much formalized bourgeois society thereafter possible while also creating perhaps one of largest employment areas outside country then present day Chicago thus providing enduring community identity with significant historical value throughout entire process despite continuing heavy pollution levels presentday resulting in difficulties accessing surviving neighborhoods today primarily composed overwhelmingly of low income / minority groups specifically plutonium contaminated homesites directly adjacent thereto which have resulted in numerous health emergencies during past several decades exacerbating neighborhood conditions somewhat
