Northbrook is a town in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. The population was 18,362 at the 2010 census. Northbrook is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It is part of the Chicago–Naperville–Uptown community and has a rich history dating back to 1830. Northbrook was named after Simon Northrop, an Englishman who surveyed the region in that year. The first permanent settler in what would become Northbrook was John Ransom in 1833. He founded a trading post called Ransom's Point on Lake Michigan near present-day Northbrook Township. In 1839, Jno Aiken acquired much of what would become north of current-day Uptown from Simon Northrop for $1,075 cash and goods he had taken from Canada as part of his surveying expedition under orders from Great Britain. In 1840, George Washington Coolidge purchased some land adjoining what would later be Illinois Street from John Ransom for $500 cash and forty acres (160 m²). Coolidge organized a township which became known as "Coolidge Manor" after him until it was merged into DuPage County in 1903. The first post office in northbrook opened on Sunday, November 1st, 1841 with David White serving as Postmaster General; James Mclntyre served as First Clerk/Register during this time frame In 1847 American Legion troops traveling through Du Page County were halted by skirmishes with Native Americans near modern day Northwest Side village of Woodlawn on their way to Springfield where they were to rendezvous with Genesee Valley militia forces led by Colonel Isaac Brockway at Mount Auburn Cemetery southeast of downtown Chicago when they encountered Native Americans again just east of present day Northwestern Side village of Westchester Village across the street from Harrison Ford's Playtime Emporium complex located today on Kedzie Avenue between State Street and Oak Park Road within blocks of Wilson Park School District boundaries which are now part of Kimball Elementary School building site) and Captain Harry Goudreau commanding 2nd Regiment Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry camped overnight at Circle Lick creek about 8 miles south west (northwest)of Mt Auburn Cemetery while awaiting orders to march northeast enroute to Springfield when all hell broke loose leaving approximately 100 Casualties including Captains Goudreau & Purdyplus 20 Indian warriors resulting in Lt Col Isaac Brockway ordering his men back home before dark without taking any prisoners On Saturday night February 25th 1861 7 Soldiers belonging to 3rd Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry camping along Red Rock Creek about 8 miles southwest (northwest)of Mt Auburn Cemetery went out exploring when suddenly there was loud moaning coming from one side or another leading them towards an open space where several hundred Indians lay dead or dying surrounded by Scalps Collector General David White foundSeveral bullets still sticking outta their Heads indicating that these Monster Animal Warriors had been fighting for hours not knowing that National Guardsmen were nearby waiting for them . After determining where these noises came from several hundred yards away he ordered his troops back home without taking any prisoners however 4 soldiers lost their lives due to natural causes such as overindulgence while others returned safely but minus their equipment

Northbrook is home to the University of Chicago and Northwestern Polytechnic Institute. It is also the birthplace of Abraham Lincoln. The first permanent settler in what is now Northbrook was Nicholas Fenton, who arrived in 1779. Fenton's farm became the nucleus for what would become Northbrook Township and its neighbor, Pennsylvania Township. The first post office in Northbrook was established on July 12, 1824. In 1828, Abraham Lincoln attended a religious services at a farmstead called “Bellefontaine” northeast of present-day Northbrook. Mr. Lincoln’s father had emigrated from Holland and graced Bellefontaine with his presence as a guest during their visit to that area some years earlier; thus it was that when Abe came to live there himself circa 1860 he knew about this place from his father’s recollections! As late as 1912–13 there were no stores or other businesses within walking distance of any existing homes in Northbrook – only two churches (Anglican and Lutheran) and one school (Northfield School). A few developers purchased parcels near Center Street but never built anything because they lacked financing or access to land necessary for such projects – until recently! Today, many people residing within easy reach of Nordbroek Shopping Center are responsible for developing this once agricultural community into one of its most vibrant residential areas outside the Loop city limits!
