The Navy has a long and rich history in North Chicago. The city’s first Naval Shipyard was built on the now-defunct Chicago River in 1887, and the USS Perry was commissioned there in 1898. The USS Constitution and USS Olympia were both named for General James K. Polk, who helped lead the United States into World War I. In 1937, the navy constructed the USS Quincy at North Chicago, which served as a training ship for naval midshipmen throughout the 1930s and 1940s. The city also hosted an annual Sailors' Festival from 1924 to 1984, during which sailors from all over the world came to meet and compete against one another in various sailboat races, music festivals, exhibits, and food tastings. In 1969, North Chicago became home to America's first naval air station when NAS Cherry Bay was established at Cherry Point Park. Since then, NORAD has responsibility for all things related to NATO operations in Northern Illinois (including Ulysses S. Grant Park). In 1992, Congress passed legislation authorizing construction of two more warships – the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 78) and USS Carl Vinson (CVN 63) – at North Chicago Naval Shipyard. These ships were eventually delivered to service in 1994 and 1998 respectively; both have since been decommissioned but remain standing as museum vessels on display inside of NAS Cherry Bay. Today, North Chicago is home to several navies that keep Lake Michigan open for shipping: The US Navy's Joint Task Force 3 headquartered here provides security for harbors along its waters; Canada's Maritime Command conducts military exercises off shore near here; Japan's Self-Defense Forces maintain a presence aboard one of their navy ships moored here; as well as numerous other military units that use or visit cherry Point Naval Station every day!

In 1969, President Richard Nixon presented Rear Admiral John Sledge with the Presidential Unit Citation for his role in saving 10 sailors from an Alabama freighter during Operation Neptune’s Spear. This was Nixon’s first time awarding a PUC and he chose Sledge because he had shown heroism on several occasions while commanding Coast Guard ships during conflict zones around the world. Since then, every president has presented a PUC to some member of the naval service upon request; however, only two members—Vice Admiral James Stavridis and Rear Admiral Gary Roughead—have received them for their entire careers as commandants: Stavridis from 1996-2001 and Roughead from 2003-2009. Each recipient receives either 2 or 4 stars on their ribbon depending on their rank at that time.[2] One common type of gift given by the navy is medals/badges/pins/stickers etc., these are usually given as part of formal ceremonies or rewards for exceptional achievement such as being selected for an award or winning a competition etc.. Medals can be awarded for bravery under fire during combat operations such as Normandy landings during World War II where US Marines killed over 500 Germans; awards can also be made for achievements like becoming First Class Petty Officer after serving aboard one ship followed by Two Years Service aboard another USS[3]. Medals can also be awarded posthumously which is particularly rare but does not preclude someone from receiving an award if they die whilst serving within our military[4]. Some examples of this would be Admiral Harry Harris being awarded his seventh decoration posthumously after death in action off Somalia[5]. Awards can also be made relating to scientific research with medals being granted such as those bestowed upon distinguished scientists such as Neil Armstrong who became commander-in-chief once America landed rockets on Mars[6], Professor Stephen Hawking who won multiple awards including The Royal Society prize[7], and more!

The area that became North Chicago was part of Indiana Territory when it was organized as a territory on December 14, 1818. On February 14, 1825, North Chicago became a full municipality with a vote by its residents On November 3rd, 1847, white men began to arrive in what is now Northwestern Indiana and find land to farm near what would become North Chicago; this led to early settlement thereabouts by whites only. In 1892 General James Wilkinson established the first post office here-Wilkinson's Store being built on Dearborn Street in 1892–the first facility west ofChicago within our limits since opening day! In 1893 “Pioneer Park” (later renamed “Winnipeg Park”) opened with woodlands stretching along Dearborn Avenue between Milwaukee and State Streets until annexation by Detroit News Field Station property owners after World War II ended all physical connection between Winnipeg Park land east of Dearborn Ave., north side of State Sts., & south sideof Milwaukee Ave.–and operations were transferred to owner’s new location across street from old field station site which served as village hall until 1967! In 1990 park boundaries were extended NE & SW to include much older section w/ same name bordered by Wacker Drnwy & Cicero Rd.–& park operations were transferred back to original Winnipegger Park site adjacent new City Hall building
The city of North Chicago was founded in 1847 by the United States army. The advent of air travel during the 1920s led to increased job opportunities in North Chicago, which helped make it one of America's leading industrial cities during that era. In addition, NorthChicago's significant African American population made it one of the most heavily Democratic cities in Illinois during this period. However, following World War II, economic growth slowdowns and tensions among different neighborhoods led to increasing crime rates in North Chicago over time. This culminated in a series of sweeping police reform efforts spearheaded by Mayor Richard M. Daley in the 1990s which saw a dramatic turnaround in crime rates within NorthChicago - though still high compared to other Midwestern cities In recent decades, however,NorthChicago has been experiencing rapid gentrification as wealthier residents move into primarily urban areas nearby; this has led to spikes in crime rates (particularly violent crimes) near downtown Notre Dame Avenue
