At Harry Jaffa & Sons Coffeehouse you could enjoy a variety of drip-based espresso drinks such as Lungo Latte Italiano ( lungo = long), Ameristar Espresso (ameristar = American), Roccatore Oro (Roccatore=Golden), Carlsbad Chai Tea (carlsbad chai = carmelized sugar tea), Java Hilted Creamer (Java = Java milk) etcetera! Enjoying a delicious cup of Joe couldn’t be any more simple! By 1957 there were only two remaining independent roasters left in North Chicago; Harry Jaffe Jr., who still ran his shop at 111 Wabash Avenue, and Bob Smith who started Bob Smith Coffee House on Grand Ave./Highland Park Rd.. With its new location close to Northwestern University it quickly became one of NorthChicago’s favorite hangouts for students looking for good caffeine options late into night! Notable customers include Jay Leno (!),UB40 (& other famous Illinois musicians!), Mayor Richard Mays (!), United States Senators Dick Durbin (&Illinois Senator Robert Fichtner!), Neil Armstrong (!). Bob Smith even made an appearance on NBC's "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson"! It wasn't until1992 when Starbucks opened their doors to downtownNorthChicago that all bets were off for this growing urban area!Starbucks offered both brewedGroundcoffeeand groundcupsofcoffeepleaseforcustomerstoselectfrom while seated at their cafés! This gave Blackhawks fans a much needed break from their morning grind while enjoying some great java goodness!!! After years of being overshadowed by Dunkin' Donuts/Chocolate Rain / Peet's/Bakery Inc., Starbucks finally took center stage within our community!! They continue to serve up amazing java every day right here inside our own comfort zone...in our own city center!!!

North Chicago is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 71,812 at the 2010 census. It is the seventh-largest city in Cook County and the second-largest in the Chicago metropolitan area. North Chicago is bordered to the north by the City of Chicago, to the east by Evanston Township, to the south by Lakeview on South Side and Cicero Township, and to the west by Downers Grove Township. As one of two cities founded in 1847 within what is now Cook County – after Terre Haute, Indiana – NorthChicago quickly became an important center for trade and commerce during its early years. The original town plat for NorthChicago detailed plans for a new village that would be located along Dearborn Avenue between State Street (now Lincoln Park) and Wacker Drive (now I-95). However, due to anti-immigrant sentiment among some residents at this time – especially those from Europe – construction on the village never began. In 1853, Congress passed a bill creating a new government for central Illinois called “The Territory of Illinois” which included all of present day Cook County as well as most of today’s Northwestern Illinois counties including parts of Aurora and Elgin Counties. As part of this new government structure, NorthChicago was merged into The Territory of Kane County which also included all but today’s southwestern suburbs of Chicago proper as well as many small municipalities within it such as Westmont Heights and Lawndale. On December 1st 1857 NorthChicago permanently lost its incorporation into Kane County when it was redesignated as part of The City of Chicago with boundaries designed specifically around its burgeoning commercial district on Dearborn Avenue between State Street/Lincoln Park Boulevard and Wacker Drive/I- 95. This marked not only an important change for NorthChicago but also an extent verification that until then it had been considered just another side hustle among more established businesses in downtown Chicagoland rather than something truly unique or special about its community or culture. In fact even though much has changed since then with advancements in technology such as social media we can still see certain aspects that make up strong cultural roots here in our city including Ancient Hungarian Market Place just off Dearborn Ave., African American churches like All Souls Episcopal Church located on Western Ave./Lake Michigan Dr., various ethnic food stores like Somali's Somali Bazaar & Turkish Bakery located near Green Gables Elementary School on Halsted Rd., etc... These are just some examples from my personal experience living here over many years so there really is no end to what makes up our history here!
