North Chicago, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 103,906 at the 2010 census. It is the tenth-most populous city in Illinois and the third-largest city north of Chicago. North Chicago's history dates back to 1847 when it was part of the Town of WestChicago. The city proper was founded on November 10, 1847 by Dr. George Hennepin as a result of land grants from the government of Canada. The first settler in what would become North Chicago was John Pritchard who arrived in 1846 from Kingston, Ontario. He built a log cabin on what is now Roosevelt Road and named his property "North Chicago." In 1850, James Aiken bought Pritchard's cabin and donated it to North Chicago for use as a library and public schoolhouse. Aiken also donated 100 acres (40 hectares) to build what became known as Park Avenue on which he erected two churches: St. Peter's Lutheran Church (now First Baptist Church) on the northeast corner and Mount Carmel Methodist Episcopal Church (now Mount Carmel United Methodist Church) on the southeast corner near present day Skokie Boulevard/Highway 362/. The original plat for NorthChicago called it "Lakeside". In 1857, James Jett started construction on an extensive brick dam across Little Calumet Creek that formed Lake Michigan around present day White Cloud Road/Highway 9W between Morton Grove Heights Cemetery and Northwest Side neighborhoods such as Evanston; he christened this lakefront development Jettstadt after himself and his father-in-law General Nicholas Johnson who had taken over management of Jetts Manufacturing Company during their elder brother Jacob's death in 1848. At its completion in 1863 million bricks were used to create one kilometer long channel that watered down Little Calumet Creek so that dwellings could be built along its banks with access via side streets or private waterwayside drives ideal for Lakeside Shopping Center now located at 159th Street/I-294 since 1954 just east of I-294 median northbound lanes only accessible via ramps leading off I-94 southbound lanes past Elmhurst Hospital campus before continuing east under I-294 onto 165th Street which ran along NORTHWEST SIDE OF I-294 until it crossed US 41 about 8 miles southeast of downtown Midland following current US 41 Business Loop before terminating at former Canadian National Railway tracks just east of Elmhurst Hospital campus inside Northwestern Memorial Healthcare District while still within Northwestern Memorial Healthcare District

North Chicago, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 97,821 at the 2010 census. North Chicago is the most populous city in Cook County and one of the most populous cities in the Midwest. The city was founded on October 10, 1867 by a group of English-speaking merchants from the town of Northampton in Massachusetts who set out for what they hoped would be an agricultural colony. They arrived in what is now North Chicago proper on October 8, 1867 and named it after their old home village of Northampton. The original town plat only covered about half of present-day North Chicago. In 1870, John DIGGS purchased part of the plat from the Lenni Lenape Tribe and built his first settler's home here – he called it "The Star." Digg's land grant to his settlers included 640 acres (250 hectares). This large parcel lay within what is now downtown North Chicago today and formed much of what later became Loop 6000 South (now Michigan Avenue), including much oftoday's northwest side (northwest corner with Western Ave., east corner with LaSalle Ave., south corner with State St.). It was also where Northwestern Memorial Hospital now stands as well as other important landmarks that have come since then like Homan Park and City Hall Park. Today remnants of some early buildings still stand around this area such as Old Ladd’s Store which once stood on Michigan Avenue just south of Federal Street; Whatcom Hotel across Western Ave.; Masonic Temple located on LaSalle; Roper Furniture Warehouse along State Street; Goodyear Tire & Rubber store located at Clark St.; Pabst Brewing Company which had its brewing facility here until 1917 when it moved to Hoffman Estates; McCormick Place movie theater located on Dearborn St.; among many others. Digg himself never lived in NorthChicago proper but rather went about his business managing his holdings throughout different parts of Cook County. However, by 1872 Diggs had decided that enough people were living near him so he sold all but 4 acres (16 hectares) to Isaac COVINGTON for $1,500 cash plus $100 per acre ($0·28 per hectare) for life – makingNorthChicago one hundred percent Dutch Americanowned! Covington immediately began developing this land into an upscale neighborhood known today as "The Ghetto". He laid out streets named after prominent citizens or memberships connected to Dutch America: Prince Alfred Drive (named after Alfred Ierlandt van der Linden whose father had been governor general of Netherlands America); John Adams Boulevard (after John Adams who served two terms under Presidents James K Polk and Franklin D Roosevelt as U S Minister to Holland America); India Spring Road/Avenue/Street named after Frederik Hendrik de Graaf Prince Regent (!), etcetera...
