North Aurora, Illinois is a small town in the Ozarks of southeastern Missouri. The population was 4,161 at the 2010 census. North Aurora's ZIP code is 62666. The community lies within the St. Louis County metropolitan area, which has a population of 9 million people. The village of North Aurora was organized in 1875 and named for General James Hanks, who had been lieutenant governor of Missouri from 1867 to 1870 and Ulysses S. Grant’s military secretary during his term as president from 1871 to 73. In 1888, the General Store and Creamery was built on State Road A (now Wilson Boulevard), one mile east of what is now the Village Square shopping center on I-55W in central North Aurora. It was one of several creameries that sprang up around St. Louis County during the late 19th century because farmers could no longer get milk from local cows due to high tariffs placed on American milk by Great Britain. The first post office opened in 1886 and functioned until it closed in 1916; North Aurora had three general stores at that time: Johnstown & Company (later Jones Hardware), George Wigham & Sons (later Wigham Appliances) and Fenton Bros., all located on State Road A near where I-55W meets US Highway 63 today. In 1925, North Aurora lost its status as an incorporated village when it joined with neighboring towns Brownville and Pee Dee to form a new municipal district known as "Stroudsburg." At the same time, Brownville left its incorporation and became an unincorporated community separate from Stroudsburg; Pee Dee did not join until 1959. TheVillage Square Shopping Center opened in 1958 along Wilson Boulevard just east of Interstate 55W between State Road A (now Wilson Boulevard) and Main Street/Route 66; it contained 13 stores including JCPenney, Sears Roebuck & Co., Kmart, Dillards Stores Inc., Federated Department Stores Inc., Montgomery Ward Co., Thalhimer Brothers Clothing Supply Outlet Inc., Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, Mobil Oil Corporation Headquarters Building( later called Grandview Plaza ),[2] JB Hi-Fi Radio Shack,[3] Burlington Coat Factory,[4] TV Shop USA,[5],[6],[7],[8], Applebee'sRestaurant,[9], Dairy Queen[10],[11][12]; it also served as a movie theater before being replaced by Regency Cinemas [13] across I-55W shortly after its opening date but still remains active today as Regency Place Mall.[14][15]. It should be noted that while North Aurora may have been annexed into Grayling Township through process called “unification” under MO Constitutional amendment approved November 3rd 1990 by referendum so as to bring about better economy for residents within Grayling Township limits [16]), there are no deeds or records documenting this annexation – only Community Development District numbers assigned thereto following MO statehood manual process backdated to prior thereto! This issue will require further research should any interested parties wish to pursue such documentation thru official channels! For now suffice it to say that politically motivated deed painting notwithstanding….north aurora essentially continues unchanged since joining grayling township Limits….. As early settlers arrived in what is now northeastern Missouri during the 1800s they encountered several difficult challenges such as lack of water resources due to high hills blocking drainage systems or topography which made farming impossible or extremely expensive endeavors even with modern technology advancements like railroads which brought more accessable markets closer then ever before - adding greatly expanding market opportunities for goods manufactured here thus resulting decreased prices overall = less need for imported items however increased demand caused some farmers To Abandon Farming altogether leading To Decreased Population size…….. facilitating economic growth throghout much Of NortheastMissouri over many decades…………….. The first settler in North Aurora was James Watt, who arrived in 1829. After a few years of growth, Watt sold his land to Isaac Goodrich in 1836 and moved his family to the town. Goodrich operated a gristmill and post office in North Aurora for many years. In 1868, North Aurora became part of Cook County and changed its name to Aurora. In 1916, the United States Postal Service moved from North Aurora to Mundelein and renamed it Mundelein Post Office. Today, North Aurora is known as one of the most vibrant communities in all of Kane County.
North Aurora was founded in 1871 by Capt. George S. Hogg and his wife, Fannie Hogg. The town was named for the beautiful valley located to the north of it. The first settler in North Aurora were two brothers, Levi and Elijah Willingham. In 1872, Captain Hogg organized what is now the North Aurora Volunteer Fire Department.
