North Aurora, Illinois is a village in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 930 at the 2010 census. North Aurora was founded in 1855 and was named after the town of Aurora, Colorado. The first frame house in North Aurora was built by Simon Gassaway in 1857. The Village of North Aurora incorporated as a village on November 2, 1958. On December 17, 1978, the name of the village changed to North Aurora Township due to incorporation into Kane County and then again on December 31st due to an amendment to the township's charter which allowed for a change in name without prior approval from the Board of Trustees. The current name originated with a request from homeowner Donnie Moretti who had campaigned for it during his successful bid for re-election as Mayor of North Aurora Township. In order not to duplicate efforts by two other townships (East Champaign and Westmont) that had both changed their names since they were established as villages within their respective borders less than 10 years earlier – East Champaign became Urbana Township (1977), Westmont became Parkland Township (1981), and Urbana Township became North Aurora Township (1988). Those changes took effect January 1st, 1988 when all villages within Kane County received email notification from Kane County clerk’s office advising them of the updated documents governing their individual boundaries.
