The United States Navy has a long and proud history in Norridge, Illinois. The Naval Shipyard here was founded in 1887 as the first naval shipyard in the United States. The navy has played a significant role in our community since its inception, and Norridge is home to one of America’s largest naval forces. One of the most important aspects of navy gift history is the variety of gifts given to members of the military by civilians. This can be traced back to before World War I when many people donated food and supplies to help support military efforts overseas. In 1919, Rear Admiral George Dewey presented an ornament from his collection to Commodore John W. Blackledge, commanding officer of USS Olympia (CVA-8). This act helped start what would become known as “the Dewey Decoration Collection” which includes items from over 350 different donors. Norridge’s involvement with the navy goes back even further than that! On July 2nd, 1887, Commodore John W. Blackledge made an donation for use at what would later be known as Naval Shipyard NORRIDE located on Chicago Ave., just north of today’s intersection of State Rd./Norridge Rd./Lake St./Wicker Ave.(now Foster Rd.). Commodore Blackledge had been instrumental in helping found this facility and was deeply interested in its potential for growth and development. It wasn’t until 1916 that construction began on what would eventually become known as Naval Shipyard NORRIDE II – now part of the American Marine Corporation fleet yards complex on Chicago Ave., across from Griggs Auto Parts store (now JCPenney). This donation allowed us to build some truly world-class vessels here at NORRIDE II including USS Constitution (CVA-13) and USS Constitution Class Submarine Squadron Five (SSBN 514), among others!

Norridge, Illinois is a town in Sangamon County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,977 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield–Streator Metropolitan Statistical Area. Norridge was first settled by farmers in 1833. The town was named after Colonel John Norridge, an early settler and one of the founders of Springfield Township. It incorporated as a village in 1881 and again as a town in 1902. The current name comes from Norridge Chapel which served as the first post office in Norridge and still does so today. In 1932, General Motors constructed an assembly plant on what is now State Street near Interstate 65 north of Norridge. This led to rapid growth for Norridgewood and other nearby towns until World War II caused mass layoffs at GM and other factories throughout northern Illinois due to the war effort (production peaked around 1945). After the war ended, growth slowed until the late 1990s when new housing developments began sprang up along I-65 south of town. Today, Norridge remains a small community complete with its own shopping mall/cafeteria complex/grocery store/school system and many small businesses including several churches (Norridge Methodist Church being particularly significant), two plazas (one honoring Veterans Memorial Day each year) and two parks - one full time (the Central Park) while the other offers annual concerts by local choirs during springtime before becoming a park open to all during falltime when temperatures drop below freezing (-16°F/-8°C). There are also three golf courses located within easy reach: First Lake Golf Course just outside town limits; The course at White Sands Golf Club east of town; and Old Hickory Hills Country Club west of town - all making it easy to find plenty of things to do if you're looking for some outdoor fun! The Townsquare Mall off I-65 opened in 2009 adjacent to Central Park providing more than 2 million square feet (190,000 m2) for retail use with over 100 stores including huge sections devoted specifically to unique ornaments such as Native American materials handcrafted from local trees or found objects - giving locals their own version of "The Smithsonian".

Thereafter many people moved into town starting shops ( hardware store etc.), physicians ( Driggs & Storey), teachers ( Whitehead & Dixon) farmers/farmers wives ( later Slaughter family), families living next door to friends they had made while growing up elsewhere then moving out again as jobs turned scarce or changed hands without leaving too much residue behind! From here things got interesting real estate wise lots were sold off piecemeal along Telephone Road becoming what we have today within minutes walking distance from most any business or stoplight imaginable especially if you could 4WD your truck across this old country road! What would life be like today without internet access? So much has changed since those early days including Norridges placeName but not least our love for good food that still brings us joy every time we sit down at home dinner!!!!
