Norridge is a village in Kane County, Illinois, United States. It was post-office town from 1879 to 1907. The population was 1,813 at the 2000 census. Norridge has a rich history dating back to 1871 when the first school opened in what is now Norridge Village. It served as a community until it consolidated with neighboring Strongsville and Rockford in 1907 under the name of Great Northern School District No. 5 (later Norridge Community School District). As one of only two villages within the Great Northern School District, Norridge played an important role in its development and growth. The other village within the district, Strongsville, achieved greater notoriety for its similarly large African American population which often clashed with their white counterparts over educational opportunities and housing choices. The residents of Norridge have long been proud of their community and its contributions to local culture and economy; many still maintain strong ties to the village today even after more than 100 years ofexistence. Reflecting this sentiment, many businesses and structures located within or near Norridge Village remain standing including: TheNorridge Creamery & Bakery Ltd., Grains Mill & Elevator Co., Mrs. John Sitton's Hardware Store Inc., Harding Chevrolet Sales Inc., First National Bank (now Citizens Bank) - all established prior to 1909 and still in operation today! In recent years there has been renewed interest in visiting this unique village as part of a larger travel destination around central Illinois known as "The Loop". One such attraction is the annual "Festival on Main" which attracts hundreds of visitors each year during late summer/early fall; tickets are available online or at several retail stores throughout central Illinois!
