Norridge was platted in 1871 by farmers who were moving west from rural Indiana and looking for new land to farm. The first post office was established in Norridge on May 1, 1872. At the time, it was the smallest town in Cook County with a population of just over 100 people. The growth of NORRidge began with the founding of the Chicago & Northwestern Railway in 1888. This railroad madeNORRidge one of South Side Chicago's most important towns as it supplied goods and services to much of northwest suburban Cook County and parts of north central Illinois. By 1914, NORRidge had become home to more than 2,000 residents and had developed such important businesses as American Woolen Mills (now Hoffman Estates) and Norris Glass Company (now BB&T). In 1922, NORRidge became one of 14 communities within the newly created city of Chicago when its boundaries were modified following annexation by that city into its greater metropolitan area. During World War II, NORRidge played an especially significant role as a munitions plant producing aluminum cans and other materials needed for military production throughout southern Illinois and northwestern Indiana; many locals also worked at this plant during or after hostilities ended. After the war ended there continued rapid growth with annexations from neighbouring towns including Hollandale (1948), Addison Heights (1955), Arlington Heights (1957), Gunnison Park (1959), Evanston Township (1963), Lincolnwood Hills (1965) and Northbrook Township (1970). During this period Norridge also attained international fame for hosting America's first televised mayoral election debate – held on October 3rd 1960 between then-mayor Richard Mobiarty and his opponent John Hynes – which helped consolidate control over Chicago politics from both factions within Mayor Emanuel's administration before he took office as mayor two years later. In recent years there have been concerted efforts to revive some aspects of local culture including music festivals hosted each summer during severe weather conditions along with community weeklies focused on economic development issues; such initiatives have generated much interest among residents but have not yet been able to bring about sustained economic prosperity like those seen during earlier eras whenNORRidge boasted world-renowned businesses such as American Woolen Mills and Norris Glass Company

Norridge, Illinois is a town in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name Norridge comes from Old French for "plain" and "thorny". The first European to visit what is now Norridge was Jean Baptiste de La Salle on his ill-fated voyage from Canada to Kankakee in 1801. La Salle named the site after Nicholas Norrington, an Englishman who had accompanied him on that trip. In 1814, John Quincy Adams visited Norridge while he was serving as President of the United States; he noted that it had been renamed after him eight years earlier by General James Hays during wartime reassignment of local government resources following the Battle of Nauvoo (1813). Norridge's post office opened in 1836 and remained open until 1957. It was then moved to its current location two miles east of downtown Chicago along the busy I-55 corridor. The town earned its nickname "The Friendly Village" due to its many contributions to civic life such as hosting several annual conventions and festivals throughout its history - most notably the Illinois State Fairgrounds which have been held every July since 1907. Ira Stone helped found Norridge Academy in 1906 and served as its first Superintendent until his death in 1938; he also founded Forest Hills Cemetery nearby. Stone ran for Mayor of Chicago twice but lost both times; however his legacy lives on through his alma mater, Norridge Academy which still operates today with up to 500 students enrolled each year.
