It lies on the north side of the Chicago River and is bordered by Plainfield to the east and Cook County to the west. The town was named for General George Washington Norridge, who fought in several wars in Europe as a cavalry officer. He had been born in 1784 near West Point, New York and died there in 1853. The town was platted in 1836 by Captain John Clements Clark under title of "Norridge Township." A post office called Norridge was established in 1841, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1903. Norridge has two schools: One public school operated by Cook County (grades kindergarten through 8th grade) while one private school operates elementary School 1st-8th grades; both are located within walking distance of each other In addition to its own police force and fire department, Norridge also has an ambulance service which provides medical transport for residents over 12 miles away from any hospital or health care facility
