Normal, Illinois is a town in Sangamon County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,847 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest municipality in Sangamon County by land area and has a total population of 7,569. Normal occupies a triangular area bounded on its north by the village of Champaign and on its east by the towns of unincorporated Cook County and Westmont; on its south it touches upon Decatur Township. The first permanent settler in Normal was Jethro Hargrave in 1814. By 1820 there were 10 families living here; two years later they had increased to 20. In 1830 Normal incorporated as a Village under the name "New Salem." That year it had 4 houses and 40 residents; Stonington incorporation followed in 1834 with 50 residents. In 1840-41 Normal's first school was built; that same year also saw the founding of what would become its second church (the current First Methodist Church). The Village became an independent town on December 22nd, 1846 when it passed a resolution annexing part of Decatur Township to form new township boundaries – this action brought about normal growth as people from outlying areas headed for richer soils near downtown Chicago closer to jobs. In 1860Normal's first post office opened – until then everything transactions took place between villages or towns within those boundaries which created some degree of confusion since mail service wasn't available from one location to another for miles around! In 1865 Normal established roads connecting all these communities making life much easier for settlers who could now marketed their goods directly to city dwellers without having to go through intermediate villages or towns!
