The Normal, Illinois Air National Guard Station was founded on May 11, 1944 as the "Normal AAFG". It was renamed the "Normal Army Air Forces Station" on December 3, 1945. The station served as the home of the 312th Bombardment Wing and then became an air force satellite station of Missouri National Guard Base in Springfield, Missouri. On February 14, 1957 it became an independent unit and was redesignated as Headquarters/Air Force Security Service ("HQ/AFSS") at Wright-Patterson AFB. HQ/AFSS assumed responsibility for all security functions for United States service members Deployed to Foreign Countries under Operation Neptune's Spear or otherwise participating in worldwide operations during that period. HQ/AFSS also prepared military plans and executed various global contingency missions including participation in Invasion of Grenada. On November 17, 1991 HQ/AFSS relocated to Offutt AFB Nebraska where it operated as Headquarters/Air Force Security Service branch until its closure on September 30, 1992 by General Accounting Office (GAO).
Normal, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 26,813 at the 2010 census. Normal is the county seat of Cook County and home to the Chicago Board of Education. The city is also the primary business center for southeastern Cook County and parts of Kane County.
